STAR Joint Council
Our Mission: To seed and develop novel scientific discoveries and innovations, leveraging on A*STAR’s spectrum of capabilities.

Across the scientific world, there is an increasing trend to conduct interdisciplinary research beyond the usual distinct boundaries of scientific convention where these previously distinct boundaries meet. Such research facilitates the transfer of concepts and skills across scientific domains, and fosters the sort of creative environment that stimulates major discoveries. A specific example of this trend is the move towards convergence of science: the exploitation of biological insights for engineering solutions, and the reverse, the application of engineering solutions in biological science.
The A*STAR Joint Council (A*JC) was thus formed in late 2007 to promote and strategically support interdisciplinary research programs that span the fields of biomedical sciences and physical sciences & engineering. The amalgamation of scientific talent at both Biopolis and Fusionopolis provides A*STAR with a compelling competitive advantage when undertaking interdisciplinary research.
As the bridge between BMRC and SERC, A*JC aims to provide researchers with an interaction platform and resources to catalyse and explore new scientific opportunities and technologies. Also important is the collaboration with our international partners. A*JC aims to foster collaboration with international scientific agencies to enhance A*STAR’s research capabilities through knowledge exchange, as well as strengthen bilateral relations with partner countries in science and technology.
