Human Capital Development

Key to realising A*STAR’s mission are our researchers, whose inventions and findings keep Singapore’s R&D at the cutting edge. A*STAR provides manpower training and development in the areas of science, engineering and technology to scientists at all levels and stages. We also offer fellowships and scholarships to encourage the best and brightest minds from around the world to pursue scientific research in top universities and research institutes.

In our laboratories, young talented undergraduates work side-by-side with Nobel Laureates and top scientists from US, Europe and Asia. There are currently about 2,300 research scientists and engineers working at A*STAR, of whom more than 50% come from over 50 countries. Our international research environment, in which English is the common language, ensures that scientists from any country or society will fit in here.

Intellectual Capital Development

A*STAR helps to build up Singapore’s intellectual capital by supporting and overseeing R&D in science, engineering and technology by its research institutes and extramural grant recipients. We aim to provide a seamless infrastructure for scientists to pursue solutions to pressing scientific problems.

Collaborations are another avenue through which knowledge is created. A*STAR engages in numerous collaborations with academia and industry both locally and overseas, including joint research programmes and student exchanges. This ensures a healthy exchange of ideas that will spawn new innovations as our scientists challenge the limits of modern science daily on their quests to seek, find and create knowledge.

Industrial Capital Development

A*STAR’s ultimate goal of pursuing world-class research is to translate scientists’ findings into meaningful and profitable outcomes for Singapore. We support the commercial application of scientific knowledge and technologies through industry engagement and collaborations, promotion of R&D investment, and an excellent legal framework to protect the intellectual property created in our laboratories.

There is a commercialisation outfit in place at A*STAR to help researchers bring their novel products and technologies to market, and to help businesses implement scientific ventures and projects speedily and efficiently. Muvee Technologies, Singular ID Pte Ltd and Curiox Biosystems are some examples of companies that A*STAR has successfully spun off.
