A*STAR-University of Illinois Partnership (AUIP) PhD Programme

The University of Illinois is a world leader in research, teaching and public engagement, distinguished by the breadth of programs, broad academic excellence and internationally renowned faculty. The A*STAR - University Of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Partnership PhD Programme (AUIP) is a four-year scholarship comprising two years of PhD studies at Illinois, and two years at a relevant A*STAR Research Institute (RI) in Singapore. PhD research training will be carried out under the supervision of an Illinois Professor and a senior member of an A*STAR Research Institute (RI). Successful students will be conferred a PhD degree by Illinois.

Areas of Interest

Research areas under the AUIP PhD Programme fall broadly under two categories:
(i) Biomedical Sciences; and
(ii) Physical Science and Engineering.

Approved research areas will be determined by the Programme Governing and Academic Board, and will be aligned with the research thrusts of the A*STAR RIs.

Eligibility

  • Singaporeans and other nationals intending to take up Singapore citizenship.
  • Candidates must satisfy criteria for PhD admission to Illinois.
  • Graduates with 1st Class Honours; or Graduates with 2nd Upper Class Honours.
  • Good O and A level track records/Polytechnic students who obtained a Diploma with Merit will also be considered.
  • Candidates must not concurrently hold any other scholarships or fellowships.
  • Successful candidates are required to undergo a one-year research attachment at an A*STAR RI, prior to their PhD studies. 
  • Awardees are expected to sit for the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) and attain at least a score of:
    • Combined Verbal and Quantitative - 319
    • Analytical Writing - 4.5

Coverage

Successful candidates will be given support for up to four years of academic pursuit.

Successful candidates will receive:

  • Monthly sustenance allowance
  • Monthly overseas living allowance
  • Full tuition
  • Computer allowance
  • Thesis allowance
  • Book allowance
  • Conference allowance
  • Travel and subsistence allowance for each permitted overseas visit

*All rates/allowances are subject to adjustments by A*STAR from time to time

Service Commitment

Upon completion of their studies, candidates will return to contribute to A*STAR's RIs for a service commitment period of three years.

A*STAR accepts and processes AUIP applications throughout the year. However priority will be given to applications that reach us by 15 April for admission to UIUC in August the following year.

Only shortlisted candidates will be notified.
