A*STAR supports graduate studies at top global universities locally and overseas for individuals to pursue a PhD, and advance their research interests and capabilities to better prepare for an R&D career.
There is an increasing demand, and wider career prospects, for PhD talent in Singapore and other research-intensive countries worldwide. A PhD allows for the acquisition of deeper scientific knowledge, skills, perspectives and experiences needed for advancement in research. Over the past decade, A*STAR has built a steady pipeline of more than 1,100 local PhD talent through the various scholarship programmes. These PhD scholars will be part of the vibrant scientific community in Singapore to spearhead research and chart the map for R&D in Singapore, supporting its transformation into a world-class research hub.
The National Science Scholarship (PhD), National Science Scholarship (MD-PhD) and the A*STAR Graduate Scholarship (Overseas) allow scholars to pursue PhD education at the best universities overseas while the A*STAR Graduate Scholarship (NTU/NUS) supports PhD education at top local universities.
There are also options available for international students who wish to pursue PhD training in Singapore universities, through the Singapore International Graduate Award (SINGA), or the A*STAR Research Attachment Programme (ARAP), for those who are seeking research exposure at A*STAR Research Institutes. Through the international awards, international PhD students have contributed to the growing diverse and vibrant R&D community in Singapore.
