Professor Lee Eng Hin, Executive Director of Biomedical Research Council, is one of only two recipients of the inaugural National Outstanding Clinician Mentor Award 2008. This prestigious award is given in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the healthcare industry, specifically in the areas of training young clinicians as well as fostering a conducive clinical and research environment.
Prof Lee was presented the prestigious award by Minister for Health Khaw Boon Wan on Wednesday, 26 Mar 2008.
Joshua Woo managed to speak to Prof Lee on his thoughts on winning the award and his views on teaching and mentoring.
The 1st Hungarian - SIngaporean Workshop on Drug Discovery and Biomaterials was held successfully on 10 - 11 March at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in Budapest, Hungary. This event featured speakers from A*STAR's research institutes and Hungary, and is part of the partnership established between A*STAR and Hungary's National Office for Research and Technology (NKTH).

A*STAR and the Singapore Science Centre announced the winners of the A*STAR Talent Search (A*TS) 2008. Into its third year, A*TS recognises students who have excelled in the field of scientific research. Guest-of-Honour, Mr S Iswaran, presented the awards to the winners at the A*TS awards ceremony held at the Biopolis.
The Exploit Technologies-MIT Club of Singapore Dinner Talk on "Start-up success – What fuels it at MIT and around Boston, Massachusetts?" was held on 12 May 2008.
The talk was well attended by more than 80 interested participants from the A*STAR family and MIT alumni members.
The Executive Chairman of Exploit Technologies, Mr Boon Swan Foo, gave the opening address, and urged more industry players to come forth and partner our startups in their entrepreneurship journey. Members of the audience were encouraged to play an active role in helping these startups evolve their business model, raise fund and share risk, just to name a few.
Ms Luda Kopeikina then went on to discuss the factors underlying the high start-up success rate at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and, more generally, around the Boston area. These parameters define the entrepreneurial ecosystem in the Boston area and at MIT that fuels this success.
