Library Rules
- Users are entitled to join and use the library facilities and in certain cases, to borrow items. Entitlements may vary. Others may be entitled to use the library facilities at the Librarian's discretion.
- Users may consult the books, journals, pamphlets, manuscripts, illustrations, films and DVDs as available. Use of certain equipment on the premises such as computers and photocopiers and printers will be subject to separate rules and users may be required to pay for the use of such equipment as the Library may stipulate.
Loan Rules
These rules apply to members who are given borrowing privileges.
Borrowing
- You are not allowed to remove any book from the library unless it is properly checked out by library personnel or at the self check machine. You may borrow a maximum 3 books for a period of 2 weeks. No loan is extended to the print journals.
- Please produce your staff card when borrowing. Borrowing must be done in person. There is a first time registration process.
- You are held responsible for all materials charged to your card.
- You must return or renew library materials immediately when due or recalled. Otherwise loan privileges may be suspended or fines incurred.
- Library materials may be returned through the book drop except multimedia materials, which are to be returned at the Loans Desk at The Brenner Library.
- Any material not returned in response to a final overdue notice would be considered as lost and you would be billed accordingly.
- Library materials are deemed to be on loan to you until properly checked in at return.
- Report the loss of Library materials immediately to the Library. Fines will be calculated, according to the prevailing fines rates below from the date due to the date when the Library material was reported lost or, if subsequently found, till the date the Library material was returned.
- Costs of replacing lost Library materials include the current cost of the books (including binding costs, if applicable) as well as administrative and processing charges of $25.00 per book.
Renewals
- You may renew the loan period of Library materials once either online or via the Loans Desk.
- Renewals will not be accepted if:
- Item is on hold for another staff
- Item is overdue and carries a fine
- Item has exceeded number of renewals allowed
- Item has been recalled
- Your accumulated library fines has exceeded $2.00
Holds (Reservations)
- Holds can be placed for Library materials with the status: Due, At binding, In-process, On order.
- You may place holds on Library materials through The Brenner Library Catalogue using the REQUEST function.
- You must check regularly to find out whether the Library materials you have placed on hold are ready to be picked up. Notices will be sent by email if it had been provided. Others will be notified by postal mail.
- Library materials ready for pickup will be kept for 5 days from the date of notification.
- You may place holds on a maximum number of 3 items according to your loan entitlement.
- You must personally collect Library materials on hold.
Overdue Materials
- Fines are levied on overdue Library materials. No fines will be charged for the days when the Library is closed on Sunday and public holidays.
Library privileges (borrowing, renewing, reserving) will be suspended (on the 6th day - see below) if overdue Library materials are not returned or renewed.
Rates of Fines
- Library privileges (borrowing, renewing, reserving) will be suspended when accumulated fines exceed $2.00.
- Fines for books start after the 3-day grace period.
- Fines for overdue books and other materials borrowed from The Brenner Library is $1.00 per day from 4th day.
General Rules
These rules apply to all users of the library
- Conduct prejudicial to the proper use of the library is forbidden.
- Smoking, food and drinks are not allowed in the library.
- Users of the library should be appropriately attired.
- Library materials may not be removed from the library unless they have been properly issued by a library staff or through a self service borrowing terminal.
- Electronic scanning of library materials is not allowed for copyright reasons.
- Library membership access cards are not transferable and must be produced whenever requested by Library staff. Members are to keep their Library membership access cards safely and ensure that their cards are not used by anyone else.
- Members must ensure that Library materials checked out to them are returned or renewed on or before the date due. Notices sent by library serve only as a reminder and non-receipt of the notices does not absolve any Member from paying fines or other penalties as stated in these Rules.
Members are required to notify The Brenner Library immediately of any change of postal address or email address.
- Mutilation, theft of library materials and/or vandalism of surroundings are offences punishable by law. Appropriate action will be taken against offenders.
- No animals are allowed on the Library premises. All children under 16 should be accompanied by an adult.
