ASTAR Computational Resource Centre (ACRC)

A*CRC provides high performance computational (HPC) resources to the entire A*STAR research community. Currently, A*CRC supports HPC needs of over five hundred strong user community and manages several high-end computers. It is also responsible for very rapidly growing data storage resources.

It operates two data centers located at the Fusionopolis and Biopolis, both ultra modern facilities located close to each other in the One-North –the new science and technology hub area in the west of downtown Singapore.

A*CRC is divided into five functional areas: i) Computational Systems, ii) Storage, iii) Networking, iv) Operations, and v) HPC Software. An integral part of ACRC activities is HPC users’ support. It also plans the future high-end hardware requirements of A*STAR and is responsible for tender and procurement processes.

BMRC Entities

Biomedical Sciences Institutes Business Centre (BMSI BBC)
The BMSI BBC is a Shared Services provider in Finance, Human Resource, Procurement, Administration and Special Projects. The mission of BBC is to deliver value-added and quality shared services, based on integrated systems and solutions, to support A*STAR in fostering world-class scientific research and talent.

Biomedical Sciences Institutes – Infrastructure Planning and Facilities Management (BMSI-IPFM)
The BMSI-IPFM is responsible for the maintenance of A*STAR’s research facilities at Biopolis, ensuring minimal impact and disruption to research activities through effective maintenance and a healthy and safe work environment. BMSI-IPFM would also leverage on the FM industry to exploit commercial best practices and innovation with the aim to achieve better performance and service in FM operations for Biopolis.

Biomedical Sciences Institutes – Information Systems and Technology Department (BMSI-ISTD)
The BMSI-ISTD seeks to enable the BMSI Units to achieve their mission through the innovative use of world-class Infocomm Technology.

Biopolis Shared Facility (BSF)
The BSF is a strategic business unit established by the Biomedical Research Council (BMRC) to manage a first-class scientific-oriented service hub. BSF offers a wide spectrum of services, ranging from scientific services and research support services to meeting facilities.

Data Protection Office (DPO)
In October 2005, the BMS International Advisory Council (IAC), endorsed four new research initiatives; one of which was the A*STAR Data Protection Office (DPO) that was established to spearhead the A*STAR Data Privacy Framework initiative.

DPO is a RDF-funded unit under A*STAR Biomedical Research Council (BMRC). The office was setup to provide an institutional “Trusted Third Party”, or TTP service where it manages the personal identity database collected from the research studies participating in the A*STAR Data Protection Framework (DPF) for record anonymization and linkages. Currently, the Singapore Consortium of Cohort Study (SCCS) and Singapore Tissue Network (STN) participated in this framework.

National Breeding Centre (NBC)
The NBC provides essential infrastructure services for research biologists in A*STAR, the Universities and pharmaceutical/biotech companies throughout Singapore. It will produce and supply test systems and models for a large range of human diseases that will support and enable Singapore’s BMS initiative, as it evolves into the pre- and post-clinical phases of translational medicine.

Singapore Bio-Bank (SBB)
The SBB, previously known as Singapore Tissue Network (STN), is a national, non-profit research tissue and DNA bank funded by A*STAR. SBB works in close partnership with Singapore’s key medical and research institutions to collect, process, archive and distribute high quality biological samples in support of research needs.

SERC Entities

Science and Engineering Institutes – Infrastructure Planning and Facilities Management (SCEI-IPFM)
The SCEI-IPFM is responsible for the maintenance of A*STAR’s research facilities at Fusionopolis, ensuring minimal impact and disruption to research activities through effective maintenance and a healthy and safe work environment. SCEI-IPFM would also leverage on the FM industry to exploit commercial best practices and innovation with the aim to achieve better performance and service in FM operations for Fusionopolis.

SERC Shared Services (S3)
SERC Shared Services (S3) was established to provide support in the areas of corporate communications, finance, human resource and information technology to SCEI and the research institutes under SERC. The integration of these services allows the adoption of best practices, better aggregation of talents and optimisation of resources across the board, an increased customer-oriented culture and continuous improvement of business processes. S3 is integral to the integration of SERC research institutes (RIs) at Fusionopolis and the matrix structure of research programmes that leverage on the multi-disciplinary capabilities of the RIs.
