Singapore, 1 June 2001 – The Biomedical Research Council (BMRC), of the National Science and Technology Board (NSTB) is pleased to announce its funding schemes. These schemes comprise 4 types of grants, aimed at supporting excellent research in the local public sector and promoting innovative as well as collaborative research. One such grant will provide seed funding for the promising new investigator to kick-start his research career.

2. Professor Louis Lim, Executive Director of the BMRC said: “In line with the Council’s mission to ‘support, sustain and stimulate excellent research’ that generates knowledge and capabilities, BMRC’s funding schemes are there for those who can
produce top quality research and are committed to make Singapore into a major player in the biomedical sciences. To ensure that high quality research is supported, the research proposals will undergo a rigorous review process by international and local scientists.”

3. Types of Grants:

i) Project Grant – Seed funding for the new investigator to engage in research for up to 3 years. Established investigators with a recognised track record and whose research proposal does not require 5-year funding may also apply.

ii) Programme Grant – Funding for an extensive programme of research by established investigator(s) for up to 5 years, in the first instance. The programme should represent an extension of existing research and may comprise sub-sections that are thematically inter-related.

iii) Co-operative Grant – Funding for interdisciplinary collaborative project involving 2 or more research groups for 5 years, in the first instance. The collaboration should be on a common theme and leverage on current strengths of each individual research group.

iv) Core Competence Grant – Funding for a cohesive research unit where investigators engage in research that develops and/or strengthens capabilities in areas that the Council considers of strategic importance. Funding will be for 5 years, in the first instance.

Project Grant – 20 August 2001

Programme / Co-operative / Core Competence Grants – 2 July 2001
