1ST SINGAPORE-AUSTRALIA BILATERAL PROGRAMME ON "INNOVATIONS IN FOOD FOR PRECISION HEALTH" CALL FOR PROPOSALS 2019

1. SUMMARY OF INITIATIVE
1.1. The Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR), Singapore, and Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), Australia, jointly announce the 1st Singapore-Australia Bilateral Programme on “Innovations in Food for Precision Health” call for proposals.
1.2. The “Innovations in Food for Precision Health” call for proposals aims to bring together key research organisations in Australia and Singapore to target science and innovation activities that will empower consumers to make healthier and more effective food, diet and lifestyle choices for longer healthy lifespan through evidence-based science and strategic public health messaging. The Singapore Principal Investigator (PI) must be a public sector research performer. The Australian PI must be an employee of a publicly funded institute and the project team should include a researcher from CSIRO.
Project proposals that include at least one industry partner (self-funded) will be preferred at the proposal evaluation stage. This cooperation framework provides an avenue for internationalisation that could incentivise Singaporean and Australian research institutes and companies to develop and strengthen capabilities in both countries to achieve triple bottom line impacts:
1.2.1. Environment: Sustainability of food supply.
1.2.2. Health: Reducing impact of chronic diseases, ageing and health safety threats; providing tools and data for policy makers to make informed decisions.
1.2.3. Economic: Opportunity for food and adjacent industries.
1.3. For the 1st Singapore-Australia Bilateral Programme on “Innovations in Food for Precision Health” call for proposals, A*STAR and CSIRO would like to invite researchers based in Singapore and Australia to submit proposals for joint research projects within the theme of food and precision health with the following focus areas:
1.3.1. Support innovations in foods designed for positive health outcomes;
1.3.2 Deepen understanding of consumer readiness and acceptance towards such foods; and
1.3.3 Demonstrate how data science is used to inform strategies to improve the health and safety outcomes of innovative foods.
Applicants should submit proposal concepts that will lead to translational outcomes by enabling future innovations in industry for Australia and Singapore.
1.4. Applicants are required to submit the grant proposal to both A*STAR and CSIRO by 4 November 2019, 1200hrs local time. The Singapore-based public sector research performer will submit a joint proposal on behalf of all research team members (including Australian partners) via the iGrants website: https://app.a-star.edu.sg/igrants/.
1.5. All joint proposals will be assessed and evaluated by independent reviewers appointed by A*STAR and CSIRO. At least five projects will be jointly funded through this grant call. Projects can be up to 12 months in duration.
1.5.1 For the Singapore component, a funding sum of up to SGD 200,000 per project (inclusive of 20% indirect research costs) will be granted to Singapore-based public sector research performers. Singapore-based industry collaborators are encouraged to participate but will not be eligible for funding.
1.5.2 CSIRO shall distribute a funding sum of up to AUD 200,000 per project on behalf of the Department of Industry, Innovation and Science (DIIS) to the Australia-based publicly funded institute. Australian-based industry collaborators are encouraged to participate but will not be eligible for funding.
