    A Vision For Better Patient Outcomes

    From growing rock sugar crystals in his grandmother’s kitchen to pioneering biomaterials that could redefine patient care, Prof Loh’s journey is a testament to the power of passion and perseverance. Today, as the Executive Director of A*STAR Institute of Material Research and Engineering (A*STAR IMRE), he continues to push the boundaries of biomaterials, turning vision into reality for patients worldwide.

    The Power of Biodegradable Thermogels

    Imagine a future where retinal surgery patients heal without multiple procedures or side effects. Prof Loh Xian Jun is bringing this vision to life. Working alongside local researchers, he invented a biodegradable thermogel that mimics the vitreous in the human eye. This innovation promises to transform post-surgery recovery, making it more comfortable and less invasive for patients. Now progressing towards clinical safety trials, this thermogel is one step closer to transforming retinal surgery.

    Beyond Ophthalmology

    Prof Loh’s passion for biomaterials extends beyond ophthalmology. As a co-founder of A*STAR spinoff Vitreogel Innovations, he leads efforts to develop the next generation of gel materials designed to integrate with the human body. One such innovation includes gel materials that can enable the slow release of drugs. This could potentially reduce the frequency of jabs, making treatment more comfortable and convenient for patients while enhancing treatment efficacy for doctors.

    These materials don’t just solve problems; they redefine how we approach patient care.

    Leading A*STAR IMRE is a multi-faceted role encompassing leadership, administration and research. Since assuming his role in 2020, Prof Loh has faced the challenge of balancing his leadership responsibilities with his passion for research. Yet his curiosity remains undiminished.

    Where possible, Prof Loh continues to explore new scientific frontiers. His other research interests on the development of a biodegradable polymer film. This film is a good substitute for polypropylene - one of the most commonly used thermoplastics in the world. This pursuit reflects his commitment to sustainability and innovative materials science.

    Guiding the Next Generation of Scientists

    “The most important thing for researchers starting out is to know your fundamentals and take things step by step," he advises. “If you have a passion for science, your work will drive you even if you fail.”

    What you learn from failed experiments is invaluable because you will eventually develop something useful.
