The Graduate Diploma in Manufacturing Operations Management (MOM) is developed to provide hands-on training to equip future PE professionals with the basic understanding of the principles involved in the field of MOM which focuses on the effective planning, scheduling, use and control of a manufacturing organisation through the study of concepts from industrial engineering, management information systems, production management, inventory management and other functions as they affect the organisation.

This programme will be conducted through a series of lectures, software tools demonstrations and hands-on model building exercises in selected industrial applications. It aims to equip participants with the knowledge and skill sets required to perform their tasks effectively in the area of MOM. Specifically, it will enhance the functional knowledge of manufacturing operations management, provides the knowledge and skills to identify opportunities for improving efficiency across the processes of organisation’s supply chain, streamlining production operations, maximising customer satisfaction by meeting delivery deadline, increasing profitability by optimising organisation’s inventory investment and enhancing credibility among peers, employers and customers.

Why This Course

This programme aims to equip employees in the PE industry with cutting-edge precision engineering technologies and skills to achieve high value manufacturing and greater productivity. Since the inception of this programme in 2009, SIMTech has trained more than 300 Professionals, Managers, Engineers and Technicians (PMETs) and more than 50 companies have benefited from sending their employees to attend the course.

Participants will be awarded the Graduate Diploma after successfully completing five modules (four core units and one elective unit). This module provides a fundamental understanding of ERP solution that is widely used by industries to manage companies’ resources. All key modules in an ERP system will be introduced in the course. Participants are given a broadbased understanding of how basic business processes such as sales and procurement management are represented within an ERP solution and how they are integrated within the ERP solution. Main techniques used in ERP system will be taught. Participants will apply those techniques through hands-on sessions. In addition, Excel tools will be introduced. Participants will use Excel tools to do exercises.

Ms Laura Xu is a Principal Research Engineer in SIMTech. She has completed many industry projects and research projects relating to ERP Implementation, Business Re-engineering, Lean Manufacturing and Value Chain study. She is a certified Production & Inventory Management (CPIM) practitioner and a certified Project Management Professional (PMP) by PMI, USA, and is also certified in Lean Six Sigma Black Belt. She obtained her Master Degree in Engineering from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, and Master Degree in Economy Management from Tsinghua University of China.

Dr Wang Fengyu is a Senior Research Engineer with SIMTech, who concentrates his research activity on inventory planning, control and optimisation; meanwhile he also leads and actively participates in industry collaborations in the area of operation management, particularly, inventory management, warehouse management, production planning, and Lean manufacturing. The intensive knowledge gained in research projects and extensive experience from several dozen industry projects in the past 18 years make Dr Wang capable of helping industry tackle the challenges in supply chain management. Dr Wang’s core capability & skills mainly include supply chain system modelling, development and analysis, optimisation techniques, Lean tools, and simulation technology. Dr Wang has Bachelor & Master degrees in Computer Engineering, from Northeastern University, China, and PhD from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. He is also certified in Production and Inventory Management (CPIM) by APICS.

This module introduces participants to the fundamental analytic methods in Operations Management (OM). It is meant to give participants a firm understanding in various techniques and practical tools that are commonly used in the analysis of OM problems. The module teaches the participants advanced techniques in modelling and simulation. Through various demonstrations and exercises using FlexSim, participants will learn how to model complex production and service systems and how to analyse and optimise them. The second topic presents an introduction to queuing systems and how to manage and simulate them. Queues are the basic tools in modelling production and service systems. Optimisation is another skill that is fundamental to OM analysis. Participants will learn to formulate problems, learn linear programming and how to solve simple optimisation problems using a mathematical tool. The last topic is on networks. Graphs and trees will be taught and their applications to various problems in OM will be elucidated. The module is supported by various hands-on exercises using Matlab, Lindo, and FlexSim. Application of the techniques learnt will be demonstrated through simple problems in planning, scheduling, forecasting, inventory control and logistics.

Mr Chin Chee Kai is currently a director of SoftML Pte Ltd, a company he founded to help companies leverage technologies in a smart way. Chee Kai has worked in some of the largest IT companies in the United States and Singapore, a pioneering info-communications authority in Singapore, as well as a venture-funded high-tech start-up in Japan. He brings more than 10 years of both government and private sector experience in the IT industry to his clients, associates, business friends and students. Chee Kai shares his experience with the future generation through teaching at the Nanyang Business School on various business and IT topics such as Management Science, Operations Management, Statistics, and Business IT. Chee Kai holds a Highest-Honors double-major degree from the University of California at Berkeley, a Masters of Science degree from the Stanford University, a Master of Business Administration (Technology) from the Waseda University, and a Dean’s Honor mention for his MBA degree from the Nanyang Technological University.

Dr Koh Niak Wu is the founder and CEO of Cosmiqo. He specialises in Supply Chain Analytics, Strategy Execution and Operations Management Innovation. He formerly worked with the Global Supply Chain and Logistics team at Dell where he contributed to strategy analytics and was a Scientist at the Planning and Operations Management Group in SIMTech, A*STAR where he gained valuable insights into the evolution of industries. He is an Adjunct Faculty member at the Singapore Management University and UniSIM where he shares his views and cross-industry experiences in Supply Chains and Operations Management.

Dr William Lee is the co-founder and chief Trainer at The SMART Methodology Company. He leads the company’s training and advisory services as well as being responsible for the strategic direction and growth of the company. William is an accomplished speaker, trainer and practitioner in the area of Process Excellence, Innovation, Market Research and Industrial Infocomm Technologies.

This module covers the fundamental principles of inventory management. In Singapore, the term often used is stock control. Inventory management measurements and techniques will be explained. Inventory management is concerned with minimising the total cost of inventory. Therefore, the financial importance of inventory management and its relationship to company financial statement will be reviewed. Dr Yuan Xue Ming is a Research Scientist from Singapore Institute of Manufacturing Technology (SIMTech), A*STAR with more than 20 years’ experience in Supply Chain Management, Predictive Analytics, and Stochastic Models and Algorithms. He has held various positions in China, France, Hong Kong and Singapore. He was appointed as an Associate Professor of Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1994, and an Adjunct Associate Professor of the National University of Singapore in 2007. He is a Certified Course Developer, Trainer and Assessor with advanced certificates for SSG courses. He has been teaching SSG Postgraduate Diploma's Manufacturing Operations Management Course Inventory Management Module since 2009 as course module leader. He has also been teaching Logistics and Supply Chain Management Course and Inventory Management Course for both Undergraduate and Postgraduate levels at the National University of Singapore.

Dr Yeo Wee Meng is a Research Scientist with SIMTech. His research interests lies in using mathematical tools to uncover fundamental limits in the efficiencies of existing operations management best practices. Using a variety of techniques such as Stochastic Modelling, Game Theory and Optimisation, his work has been used to design operations strategies for manufacturing companies. He received his degree in Applied Mathematics and PhD in Integrative Science & Engineering from the National University of Singapore. As a certified ACTA (Advanced Certificate in Training and Assessment) trainer, he has conducted training in inventory management for companies and is a firm believer that working closely with industry partners provides a valuable source of inspiration for sensing their requirements.

This module provides an understanding of techniques that are widely used for generating finite capacity plan and schedule for factory operations. An overview of the field and issues will be followed by detailed discussions of the major techniques, mainly the heuristics and simulation-based techniques. Emerging techniques and trends in Planning & Scheduling

Mr Chua Tay Jin is currently a Principal Research Engineer in SIMTech. He has more than 22 years of working experiences in the areas of manufacturing operations management related technologies. Since joining SIMTech, he has led several industrial and research projects in the areas of advanced planning and scheduling and enterprise resource planning. He is a certified practitioner in Production & Inventory Management (CPIM) and certified in Resource Management (CIRM) by APICS, The Association for Operations Management, USA. He is currently spearheading an industry-wide effort on helping companies in the PE industry by developing dynamic production planning and scheduling software for high-mix low-volume manufacturing environment. To date, he had three USA patents and one Singapore patent granted in the area of production planning and scheduling. He is also the Course Leader for the Graduate Diploma in Manufacturing Operations Management (MOM) course and the Module Leader for the Advanced Planning and Scheduling (APS) module. He has also obtained ACTA training and certification.

Dr Chong Chin Soon is currently a Principal Research Engineer in SIMTech. He graduated from the City University, UK with a BSc (Electrical and Electronic) in 1990, from Nanyang Technological University with a MEng (Mechanical) and a PhD (Electrical and Electronic). He has over 20 years of research and industrial experience in simulation, scheduling and optimisation as applied in the domain areas of containter port, factory and warehouse, semiconductor manufacturing, MRO inventory optimisation. He specialises in simulation-based scheduling and cost optimisation using meta-heuristics including genetic algorithm, bee colony, tabu search and simulated annealing. He has obtained ACTA training and certification.

This module aims to provide trainees with the knowledge and skills of shop-floor tracking and control through an understanding of business performance indicators, the knowledge to identify and select suitable operational KPIs to support business performance indicators in a holistic manner, the ability to model a manufacturing shop-floor environment and conduct tracking and monitoring, the ability to determine the overall equipment effectiveness (OEE), and the ability to control shop-floor operations. Trainees will use an MES during hands-on assignment sessions where they have to model a shop-floor environment and use the tracking features of an MES to perform production status and operator tracking.   Mr Tan Chak Huah is currently a Principal Research Engineer with the Singapore Institute of Manufacturing Technologoy (SIMTech) since 1986. He received his MSc (CIM) from the Nanyang Technological University in 1993. He has been involved in various industrial projects for shop-floor Track and Trace using RFID technology, material handling, and condition-based monitoring. He has experience in system modelling, database design, and resource allocation for discrete Manufacturing Execution Systems. He has also obtained ACTA training and certification.

Dr Zhao Yi Zhi is a Senior Research Engineer with SIMTech. He received his MSc in Computer-Integrated Manufacturing from the Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. He has more than 20 years of R&D and industrial project experience, specialising in wireless sensor networks, DBMS and network communications for intelligent manufacturing system and factory visibility, rule-based re-configurable prioritisation and dispatching for energy-efficient production system, dynamic reconfiguration for complex systems modelling, intelligent and automated control for air-cargo handling system. He has years of experience in conducting industry training courses. He has obtained ACTA training and certification.

Dr Luo Ming received her PhD from the Nanyang Technological University, Singapore in 1998. She is currently working in SIMTech as a Research Scientist. She has more than 15 years of industry experience in the fields of data and system modelling, Business Process Re-engineering (BPR) and supervisory control system design and development. She is an experienced project leader and led in-house and CRP projects in the areas of data mining for fault diagnosis and prediction, computational intelligence based optimisation algorithm for dynamic resource allocation. Her areas of expertise include system analysis and data modelling for manufacturing shop-floor systems, system architecture design, database design, and rule based event management system and computational intelligence for data mining. Dr Luo Ming has obtained ACTA training and certification.
