Course Outline

The course covers the principles and techniques for optical radiation measurements including the basic concepts of radiometry and photometry, the properties of light sources and detectors, measurement standards and instruments, as well as calibration methods and techniques. The course consists of four self-contained modules. A participant can choose to register for all four modules or any modules of the course. This course will be useful for management and technical staff working in optically related and precision engineering industrial sectors.

Course Instructors 

Mr Huang Xuebo is a principal metrologist in the Optical Radiation Laboratory in NMC. He has more than 19 years of experience in the field of optical radiation metrology.

Mr Liu Yuanjie is the Assistant Head and a senior metrologist in the Optical Radiation Laboratory in NMC. He has more than 14 years of experience in optical radiation metrology and is in charge of measurements in photometry and spectrophotometry.

  • Total luminous flux measurement using integrating sphere photometer
  • Colour temperature measurement

Module 3:  Radiometry and spectroradiometry measurement and calibration

  • Overview of basic radiometric quantities, measurement standards and instruments
  • Sources and detectors
  • Primary standards for optical power measurements – the cryogenic radiometer
  • Monochromator, PDA spectrograph and spectroradiometer
  • Spectral responsivity of detector and its measurement & calibration
  • Optical power meter and its calibration
  • Laser power meter and its calibration
  • UV radiometers and their calibration
  • Spectral measurement of CW and pulsed light source
  • Spectral irradiance and its calibration
  • Spectrometer and material properties measurement (transmittance, reflectance and  absorbance)

Module 4:  Solar radiometry and Photovoltaic device measurement and calibration

  • Fundamental principle of solar radiation and measurements
  • Basic concepts and quantities of photovoltaic measurements
  • Properties of sunlight & solar simulators and characteristics of solar cells & devices
  • Primary calibration method of reference solar cells using differential spectral responsivity method
  • Secondary calibration method of large area PV cells using I – V tester under standard testing conditions
  • Measurement method of solar simulator by spectroradiometer according to IEC 60904-9: 2007-10 standard
  • Calibration procedures, measurement setups, major equipments in PV measurements
  • PV Measurement  and calibration standards and traceability
  • Uncertainty evaluation for calibration of PV cells and devices
  • Demonstration on primary calibration of reference solar cells using differential spectral responsivity measurement facility
  • Demonstration on secondary calibration of large size of PV cells using current  to voltage tester
  • Demonstration on solar simulator measurements

A participant can choose to register for all four modules or any modules of the course. To register for the course, please send the signed registration form to  two weeks before the course date.

Due to the limited number of places, acceptance of registration will be based on a first-come-first-served basis.  All successful registrants will be informed.  Payment is required on registration confirmation.  Crossed cheques should be made payable to “SCEI-NMC”.  Payment can also be made by credit card and NETS.  If a registrant is unable to attend, another candidate may replace him/her.  A 50% refund will be made only for withdrawals received in writing at least five days before the commencement of the course.  NMC reserves the right to cancel or postpone the course.  In the event of cancellation, registration fees will be refunded in full.
