Metrology Upgrading Programme - Temperature Measurements for the Industry Calibration & Uncertainty Analysis


About Metrology Upgrading Programme (MUP) 
MUP aims to contribute to the productivity of the industry through transferring and sharing knowledge and expertise in measurement science and technology with the industry. This programme comprises metrology courses, workshops, and seminars which are held throughout the year. Technical staff and researchers who work on measurements and instrumentation in the various industrial sectors will benefit from the programme.


Course Outline
This course will introduce participants to temperature measurements in the industry, the International Temperature Scale of 1990 (ITS-90) and how temperature fixed points are used to realise ITS-90. The course covers:

  • The principles of measurement traceability, fundamentals of measurement uncertainties and interpretation of calibration reports.
  • The principles of thermocouple for measuring temperatures based on the Seebeck effect and electromotive force (emf) to temperature conversion.
  • The effects of inhomogeneity and sources of errors. 
  • The principles of platinum resistance thermometry and resistance bridges and the use of primary fixed points such as the triple point of water.

An important aspect of the course is the laboratory sessions which are specially designed to provide participants with valuable firsthand experience in the use of state-of-the-art instruments for temperature measurements.


Course Instructors 
Mr. Victor Tan is a principal metrologist with 28 years of experience in temperature metrology. He set up the temperature measurement standards in NMC and has carried out many projects and consulted widely in this area. Mr. Victor Tan received his training in thermometry in Australia.


Mr. Kho Hao Yuan is a metrologist with 13 years of experience in temperature metrology. He specializes in measurements with resistance thermometers and has set up the fixed points resistance thermometry capability in NMC. He has carried out  many projects and calibrations in temperature measurements. Mr. Kho has a B.Eng. (Hons) in Mechanical Engineering and a MSc in Mechatronics.
