Infrared Cameras

Infrared light is invisible to our eyes, but carries important information about chemical and biological systems. Traditional infra-red cameras require bulky cryogenic cooling to achieve high sensitivity. We are using quantum technology to build a compact, portable, infrared camera.

This setup uses a special crystal to create pairs of entangled green and infra-red photons. Infra-red photons, which can penetrate deeper into samples without inflicting damage, are sent through a sample. Due to entanglement properties of the photon pairs, we are able to construct an image through measuring only green photons. Effectively we are using visible light to take an infra-red photograph. We are working to develop this into a new tool for biologists.
