Prof Jonathan SECKL (Chairman)
Moncrieff Arnott Professor of Molecular Medicine/ Executive Dean University of Edinburgh
Professor Jonathan Seckl holds both medical and scientific qualifications (MBBS from UCL, PhD from ICL) as a clinical endocrinologist and former Wellcome Trust Senior Clinical Research Fellow. Not only is Prof Seckl a prolific author of over 300 peer-reviewed scientific papers (citations >21,000; h=77), he is an exemplary mentor with 36 of his students achieving their PhDs. In addition,he is highly regarded by the global community, having given ~200 invited lectures at international meetings and talks on TV and at public forums on stress, obesity, developmental programming and ageing. Prof Seckl has been on many grant awarding committees and was a member of the Scottish Government’s Scientific Advisory Committee and an RAE2008 subpanel. He is currently on the MRC and Wellcome panels, and the Councils of the Academy of Medical Sciences and the Society for Endocrinology. He advanced the ‘Entrepreneur-in-Residence’ concept for UK medical schools and leads Edinburgh’s MRC Developmental Pathway Funding Scheme Pilot Portfolio. He is currently Executive Dean and Director of Research of Edinburgh University’s College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine.
Prof Paul ZIMMET
Director Emeritus and Director of International Research Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute
Professor Paul Zimmet has outstanding international credentials in diabetes and obesity research, both clinically and academically, particularly in the fields of epidemiology, public health and molecular biology. He was the Founding Director of the International Diabetes Institute and is now Director Emeritus of the Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute, and Honorary Professor at Monash University, Melbourne, Australia and Adjunct Professor, Graduate School of Public Health, University of Pittsburgh, USA
Prof Zimmet co-chairs the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) Task Force on Epidemiology and Prevention and co-chaired the 2009 World Health Organisation Expert Committee on Diabetes. He designed and co-leads the team carrying out the “AusDiab Study”— the first national diabetes and obesity study in Australia – and has been actively involved in the Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute’s indigenous diabetes activities in Central Australia. He is also widely recognised for his studies in Indian and Pacific Ocean populations, which provided new insights into the genetic, environmental, as well as socio-cultural impacts on type 2diabetes and obesity.
Prof Zimmet has been awarded many Australian and international honours including the Kelly West and Harold Rifkin Medals from the American Diabetes Association, the IDF Eli Lilly Award, the AM Cohen Award at the European Diabetes Congress in Jerusalem, 2000, and the UNESCO/Mehnert Award of the European Diabetes Congress in Munich in 2004. He also received the inaugural Peter Bennett Diabetes Epidemiology Award for outstanding contributions to research on the epidemiology of diabetes, the Kellion Award of the Australian Diabetes Society, the Banting Award Lecture of Diabetes UK, the Charles Best Oration in Canada, and the global Novartis Award for long standing contributions in the field of diabetes that have had a major impact in diabetes, in 2007. In 2010, he received the Grand Hamdan International Award for Medical Sciences in the field of Diabetes Mellitus.
Prof Zimmet has also been awarded Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) for distinguished services to medicine, nutrition, and the biotechnology industry.
Prof Johanna DWYER
Professor, Medicine and Community Health, Tufts University School of Medicine Professor, Gerald J. and Dorothy R. Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University
Johanna Dwyer D.Sc., R.D., is Professor of Medicine (Nutrition) and Community Health at the Tufts University Medical School, and Adjunct Professor of Nutrition at Tufts University Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy. She is also Senior Scientist at the Jean Mayer/USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University, and Senior Nutrition Scientist (contractor), Office of Dietary Supplements, Office of the Director, National Institutes of Health.
She is the author or coauthor of more than 300 research articles and 300 review articles published in scientific journals on topics including dietary treatment of end-stage renal disease, the role of dietary flavonoids in health; dietary supplements; preventing diet-related disease in children and adolescents; maximizing quality of life and health in the elderly; vegetarian and other lifestyles, and nutrition policy. She also serves as the editor of Nutrition Today, and is the co-editor of the Handbook of Nutrition and Food.
Dr. Dwyer has served on many committees, including the 2000 Dietary Guidelines for Americans Scientific Advisory Committee. She served for 10 years as a member of the Food and Nutrition Board of the National Academy of Sciences, was elected member of the Institute of Medicine National Academy of Sciences in 1998, and served as Councilor of the Institute of Medicine, National Academy of Sciences, from 2001-2004. She is a past president of both the Society for Nutrition Education and the American Institute of Nutrition (now the American Society of Nutrition) and served as a Robert Wood Johnson Health Policy Fellow in the US Congress. She served as a Public Trustee of the International Life Sciences Institute, North America, from 2000-2015.
Dwyer has always been active in educating the public on nutritional topics. For three years in the late 1970’s she coauthored a newspaper column entitled Food for Thought that appeared in 200
newspapers nationwide. Since 1995 she has served as editor in chief of Nutrition Today, a peer-reviewed journal for professionals and laymen with reviews on a variety of nutrition topics
Dwyer received her D.Sc. and M.Sc. from the Harvard School of Public Health, an MS from the University of Wisconsin and a B.Sc. degree with distinction from Cornell University.
In 2015 she received the American Society for Nutrition’s award for excellence in teaching. In 2014 she was awarded the first “Trailblazer” Award from the Institute of Food Technologists and the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics for her work in fostering interaction and collaboration between food scientists and nutrition scientists to improve the public health. She received an award from the China Dietetic Association in Taiwan in 2014 for 25 years of educational work in dietetics and nutrition education. Other honours include the Conrad V. Elvejhem Award for public service in 2005 from the American Society for Nutrition, the Alumni Award of Merit from the Harvard School of Public Health in 2004, the WO Atwater award in 1996, and the Medallion Award of the American Dietetic Association in 2003.
Prof John Greally
Professor, Departments of Genetics (Division of Computational Genetics), Pediatrics (Division of Genetics) and Medicine (Division of Hematology) at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine
Dr. John Greally is a Professor in the Departments of Genetics (Division of Computational Genetics), Pediatrics (Division of Genetics) and Medicine (Division of Hematology) at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, where he has been on faculty since 2001. A native of Ireland, Dr. Greally received his honours degree in Medicine from the National University of Ireland in Galway (NUIG) in 1988, subsequently moving to the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh for Pediatrics residency and Yale University in 1993 for subspecialty training in Clinical Genetics. Since his clinical training, he focused on basic science research, receiving his PhD degree in 1999 from NUIG.
Dr. Greally’s research is in the area of alternative mechanisms of genetic disease, with a focus on epigenomic regulation of the genome and its dysregulation in disease. Dr. Greally is the founding director of the Einstein Center for Epigenomics, where the development of computational resources to manage and analyse complex data sets from massively-parallel sequencing has been a priority from the establishment of the Center in 2008. He serves on the editorial boards of the journals PLOS Genetics, Genomics and Epigenetics and Chromatin, and is involved with the New York Genome Center. His research includes studies of the epigenetic regulation of cell differentiation, and epigenetic abnormalities in human diseases such as autism spectrum disorder, osteosarcoma, type II diabetes mellitus, hepatitis C virus and toxoplasma infections. He also performs clinical duties at the Children’s Hospital at Montefiore as a Clinical Genomicist, seeing patients who have been tested with new genome-wide technologies.
Robert (Rob) H. Miller, Ph.D.
Dr. Miller oversees the consumer nutrition health business and the product research and development pipeline at Kaleido, following a successful 30 year career at Abbott Nutrition. Miller was responsible for global pediatric, adult, and performance nutrition product development, innovation, new ventures, medical safety, clinical and preclinical research as the Divisional Vice President of R&D, Scientific and Medical Affairs at Abbott Nutrition. He was part of the Executive team managing the $7 billion nutrition business. Dr. Miller led the global R&D, Scientific Affairs, New Ventures and Project Management organizations. He was the architect of the globalization of R&D into India, China, Singapore and Europe during 2010-2016. Dr. Miller was on the Abbott Scientific Governing Board from 2008-2016, and co-chair from 2013-2016, overseeing scientific recognition, talent development and research areas for the 2,500 scientists for all Abbott Laboratories divisions. He continues to play an active role in creating leaders in scientific areas through his involvement as a Commissioner on the Food System Leadership Institute of the Association of Public and Land Grant Universities (APLU).
Dr. Miller started his career as a clinical research scientist at Abbott and gained experience in multiple areas in developing new technologies, patents, products and processes that advanced the intersection of nutrition science and business. He directed Advanced Technology Development as Director, Biotechnology at Battelle from 2001-2004. Miller holds a B.S. in Biochemistry from the University of Minnesota and a Ph.D. in Nutritional Biochemistry from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He completed a Staff fellowship at the National Institute of Health at NIAAA.
