   Moving Towards Digital Manufacturing


   Mr Soh Chee Siong

Abstract
Through the implementation of an integrated Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) and Industrial Manufacturing System Monitoring, real time data are collected on the shop floor and display in dashboard. This optimises efficiency and effectiveness through real time information transparency. JEP is starting to use data analytics to optimise factory operations, boosting equipment & manpower utilisation. With this digital tool, the company expects to drive a 25-35 per cent increase in utilisation with substantial increase in operational costs.

With new management tools, operations managers will have a clearer view of work in progress (WIP) parts flowing through the manufacturing floor, which can help them schedule factory operations and product deliveries, thus reduces WIP and inventory cost. Using Digital In-Process Inspection Plan Management System, real data on the shop floor is captured, providing statistics with control limits to get a firm grip on quality performance and maintaining control.

Biography
Currently, Mr Soh Chee Siong is the CEO of JEP Precision Engineering Pte Ltd, a home-grown SME manufacturing precision components for the Aerospace, Oil & Gas and Electronic industries. 

Mr Soh started his career with Hamilton Sundstrand Pacific Aerospace Pte Ltd, a fully-owned subsidiary of UTC Aerospace System in 1975. He has over 40 years of aerospace component manufacturing experience. Over the years, he rose through the ranks and his last held position was the Plant Manager of Hamilton Sundstrand Changi Plant. 

Mr Soh joined Rolls-Royce Singapore Pte Ltd as Operations Director in April 2010 for Rolls Royce Trent Engines. He led a new team and was responsible for setting up the new facility in Seletar Aerospace Park, which focuses on the manufacturing of the wide chord fan blade.

Mr Soh holds a Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Business Management Studies from University of Bradford. He also holds the Certified Diploma in Accounting & Finance (ACCA) and a Certified Quality Manager (SQI). 



 

 

   Fostering Sustainability through Model Factories

Abstract

The integration of manufacturing in the internet of things or internet of production (IoT/IoP) allows the design of very flexible and efficient production systems on the road towards I4.0. Industry and research are currently embracing these innovative technologies, methods and tools that can contribute to both economic and environmental sustainability. With the implementation of I4.0, innovative didactic concepts are required to cope with new arising tasks on the job and in the development of such systems. Model factories like "Die Lernfabrik“ at the Institute of Machine Tools and Production Technology, TU Braunschweig, are used as an accelerator to foster the implementation of I4.0 in manufacturing systems. The transfer of large-scale industrial operability into a small-scale model factory enables a practical approach to convey methods and tools to improve the environmental impact and decrease the costs for resources and energy of production plants.

Biography
Prof. Dr.-Ing. Christoph Herrmann is the Dean of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of Technische Universität (TU) Braunschweig in Germany, university professor for Sustainable Manufacturing & Life Cycle Engineering and co-director of IWF, Institute of Machine Tools and Production Technology. Since 2009, he leads the Joint German-Australian Research Group on “Sustainable Manufacturing and Life Cycle Engineering” together with Prof. Sami Kara from the University of New South Wales (UNSW), Sydney. 

As a company’s founder (2002 - 2007) he has transferred tools and services to support design for environment into the electric/electronic and automotive industry. From 2005 to 2008, he was also scientific director of KERP Center of Excellence Environment & Electronics, Vienna. From August 2009 to February 2013, he was scientific director and member of the NFF (Niedersächsisches Forschungszentrum Fahrzeugtechnik / Automotive Research Centre Lower Saxony), Germany. Prof. Herrmann has conducted various industry and research projects in the context of life cycle engineering and sustainable manufacturing on national and international level. He was chairman of the international conference series Eco-X in 2005 and 2007 in Vienna and chairman of the 18th CIRP Conference on Life Cycle Engineering held in Braunschweig in 2011. Since 2012, he is Visiting SIMTech Fellow at the Singapore Institute of Manufacturing Technology. He has published more than 200 papers and book publications as author, co-author and editor. Prof. Herrmann is a member of the International Academy for Production Engineering (CIRP).

In 2011 Prof. Herrmann's team, together with colleagues from Fraunhofer and industry partners, has won the German Resource Efficiency Award from the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology (BMWi), Germany. In 2013, the lecture "Product and Life Cycle Management" was rewarded with the LehrLEO award by the TU Braunschweig for the best lecture in the bachelor degree programme. Since April 2009, Prof. Herrmann is mentor professor for the Klaus Murmann Fellowship Programme at the Foundation of German Business (Stiftung der Deutschen Wirtschaft, sdw).

Abstract

Pirtek Asia invited SIMTech, a Research Institute of the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) to train its key personnel in WSQ Operations Management Innovation (OMNI) Programme.  Within 6 months, the company applied the various operational methods leading to significant productivity and process improvements. 

Most importantly, the operations improvement and productivity actions were executed in the most effective manner in the form of Techniques and Tools taught by the OMNI mentors. 

This presentation outlines the broad areas of OMNI Methodology and share some examples of the benefits and successes Pirtek had chalked up through the programme.


Biography
Mr Lim Yuin Pin is the Managing Director of Pirtek Asia, a hydraulic product and mobile service company to serve multi industries such as construction, marine, transportation, logistic, etc had a successful career in the aerospace industry in his early, formative years.  He worked in various MNCs in the Aerospace industry.  Starting off as an engineer, he rose to the rank of General Manager before he decided to follow the call of his entrepreneurial spirit. He left the corporate world to set up Pirtek Asia. 

Pirtek Asia business started with a two technician operation in 2000.  It has grown into a multi-million dollar revenue business with 50 employees. In addition to its mobile hydraulic business, Pirtek has now expanded to serve the more demanding industries such as Oil and Gas, refineries, pharmaceutical and defence with engineering services and solutions.

   
 

   Digitalisation Roadmapping for Industry 4.0

Abstract

As Industry 4.0 takes root in industry, making sense of  how “The Internet of Everything” will change businesses and how to take advantage of it to deliver values are key to preparing companies to become the Factory of the Future. For Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), the digitalization journey involves the adoption of digital technology in 2 distinct areas – Information Technology (driven by business and workflow process automation) and Operational Technology (driven by Industrial Process Automation and factory automation). Using the Self-Assessment System Framework Radar chart provided by our System Framework Assessment Matrix, 4-quadrant analysis can be performed to configure various subsystems that will prove be extremely helpful for developing “Digitalisation Roadmapping” strategies for enterprises.

Biography
Mr Ronald Leng, Lead Enterprise System Framework Initiative, joined SIMTech in 2015. He is the Lead for Enterprise System Framework Initiative with over 30 years of industry experience in championing business excellence, manufacturing excellence and professional and operational execution in the running of manufacturing plants for US, European and Japanese multinational companies. 

In the early days, Ronald had also worked in the semiconductor and disk drive industry in process and operations. Ronald had operational experience in running MNC manufacturing plants. He was a Director of Systems and Process Engineering in Thomson Group, and as a department Head at REC Wafer Plant where he was responsible for the global business process management, Enterprise Architecture and System Audits. Ronald had also headed the IFS Regional Business Consulting division in Asia, Infor Global consulting teams and was responsible for the full portfolio of IFS and Infor business application suite solutions for Enterprise Business Solutions.  His interest has always been focused on the continuous development of IT strategy and the digital transformation of enterprises to operate as “Connected  Factory of the Future”.

Abstract

To embark on the journey of continuous improvement, Seng Heng Engineering (SHE) Pte Ltd decided to adopt the LEAN Implementation Programme with the key objectives of maximising efficiency, reducing waste and adopt new techniques to identify and tackle key operational problems within the organisation. 

Through the LEAN programme, the SHE Team now has a clear concept about LEAN manufacturing and are equipped with LEAN techniques and tools to facilitate the implementation of Kaizen.

Biography
Mr Jackie Lau is currently the Managing Director of Seng Heng Engineering Pte Ltd and has been involved in the business for 11 years.

He has been asked to share his thoughts on international industry standards in Business Times SME Magazine – Jul/Aug 2016 and SPRING News – March 2015. He has been featured on various platforms (SNEF, SPRING and Straits Times/Business Times).

Biography
Ms Lim Peck Hui is the founder and Managing Director of Tunity Technologies Pte Ltd in 2003. Throughout her career, Ms Lim is a strong advocator of productivity as she believes that productivity is the engine of development and growth. This explains her passion for RFID technology as she witnessed the transformation and improvement when her clients adopt RFID technology in their operation and work processes. She aims to help more businesses transformed their operation successfully and scale greater heights. Ms Lim has 2 patents under her name.

She started her career in the Ministry of Defence, Singapore as a Budget Analyst and was instrumental in various cost saving projects in her mainstream work in managing Defence Budget and as a productivity activist in the Ministry. 

In ST Electronics, she established Radio Frequency Identification businesses and played a key role in developing the Patent System and Innovation Award and promoting research and development activities in ST Electronics Ltd. She strongly believes that continuous innovation is the key for sustainability.

Abstract
Vento is in the business of manufacturing high-end glass and doors for the Good Class Bungalows in Singapore and its immediate neighbouring countries. Our business has been sustaining remarkably well because we constantly adapt our operations to the changing winds of the local and regional economies.

We are constantly venturing our production nimbly to achieve our goal of optimising our resources to meet the ever increasingly demand of our customers. Through the OMNI programme, we utilised the Business Model Canvas to recognise that our operations cost has been the primary key area to tackle. As a result, we identified our gaps. Finally, we strengthened our processes with the following initiatives:
• Utilise Value Stream Mapping tool to map our Aluminium Fin Manufacturing Operation
• Standardise The Design Review & Workflow Process 
• Apply Visual Management Technique to improve Coating Inspection Process
• Develop a Consolidated Multi-Project Scheduling Tool


Biography
Mr Yeh Bao Say, Managing Director of Vento Systems Pte Ltd, since 18 years ago, worked in two Multinational Corporations  that spanned over 10 years before beginning his journey of enterprise.

Mr Yeh started as an Application Engineer in a Process Automation company, configuring and commissioning control system and IT system for Pulp & Paper companies in Indonesia and Thailand. Five years later, he joined a PCB manufacturing company, to ensure all equipment were maintained and upgraded to support production. Thereafter, he moved to another new role and joined its IT department to maintain its computer servers, personal computer, telecommunication and networking systems and to improve the information systems which provided critical information for plant operations.

Abstract
SYSTMZ Pte Ltd has been growing rapidly in this fast-paced, high-mix low-volume, customised laboratory and healthcare furniture business. It is vital that key information from drawing dates to manufacturing and outsource, delivery to site, installation and rectifications are tracked and communicated between the project managers and the various operations and support functions in the supply chain. At the moment this planning and coordination is done manually through emails, excel sheets, phone calls and meetings. As the company grows, it must leverage on technologies and move beyond these manual coordination and updates as the project management effort will grow in complexity and cost with growth.

This presentation will illustrate how SYSTMZ digitised its project management in the workflow and share these with stakeholders using wfMOBILE™ to improve efficiencies, effectiveness and productivity.

Mr Richard Ng is a Director of SYSTMZ Pte Ltd. Previously, he worked for more than 20 years in the PC industry, telecommunications and manufacturing industry. Richard obtained his Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) in Electrical and Computer Systems Engineering.

   Finding the Real Problems is the Key to Successful Innovation

Abstract
In order to make real innovation, you need to identify the real customer problems. Companies tend to focus too much on the “D” in R&D. The “R” is probably even more important for innovating products that really makes a change. Neglecting the real pain and gain of the end users often result in advanced and interesting engineering solutions, but in the marine business most owners/operators are looking for rugged products that have a real effect on their revenues.

When initiating a new R&D project, people tend to make overoptimistic business cases driven by the will to try their new ideas. If we, instead, put more focus on finding the real problems, we have a “built inbusiness case” if we can come up with a solution to this problem. Solving a problem is normally much more straightforward than finding a suitable use for an interesting product.


Johan will discuss this matter and present some hands-on examples of how good control of the real problems has transformed the whole vessel design and improved earnings for the customers.


Biography
Mr Johan Bergman, Director, Technology Development of MacGregor, Sweden AB, has a MSc in Mechanical Engineering from KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Sweden. In the past 15 years, he has been working in the Marine business focusing on R&D. Today, he is heading a global team developing new products, solutions, materials and techniques for Smart Ocean Technology Division.

Prior to this, he was part of a team that first introduced Metal 3D-printing in Sweden. He has also experiences with high tech materials, and developing Digital X-ray machines.
