Waste with a Life Cycle View

Abstract
Over recent decades, demand for various resources has increased at an unprecedented rate to underpin human well-being. However, our current resource use is problematic and generates massive waste, which is approaching the carrying capacity of our planet. Therefore, the current waste generation trend must be fully understood and adjusted. This presentation looks into waste and waste generation with a life cycle view in order to facilitate future waste management. A number of concepts such as peak waste, circular economy, resource efficiency and life style, will be presented as a solution to future waste management.

Bio
Sami Kara is a mechanical engineer with a PhD in manufacturing. He has more than 30 years of experience in industry, research and tertiary education, including several engineering and management positions in manufacturing companies in Australia and around the world. In 2001, he has joined the University of New South Wales with research interests in sustainability in manufacturing, energy and resource efficiency in manufacturing, Life Cycle Engineering, Industry 4.0 and smart manufacturing, and urban production and factories. He is the founder and in‐charge of Sustainability in Manufacturing and Life Cycle Engineering Research Group (www.lceresearch.unsw.edu.au). He is also the co-director of joint German‐Australian Research Group on Sustainable Manufacturing (www.sustainable-manufacturing.com).

Sami Kara is an elected fellow of the UNSW Scientia Education Academy, and an elected fellow of the International Academy of Production Engineering (CIRP).

   
Food Waste – Time for Solutions

Abstract
This talk explores the state of food waste from an economic, environmental and social impact stand-point from a global and a local perspective. There is no one size fits-all approach as there are many reasons for food waste, and therefore calling for a wide array of solutions, some of which companies such as Sodexo are embarking on in the technical, digital, standards, and processes space and bringing economic returns. A topic of this magnitude also comes with its own associated challenges – which would be also touched on during the talk. Ultimately it is the actions that count. This talk will conclude with a call to action for the industry as whole to capture the business opportunities through the implementation of concrete food waste solutions within their own organisation as well as collaborate with other stakeholders however small or big they may be, to address this challenge.

Johnpaul Dimech is a seasoned and astute international CEO with 20 years’ experience in the B2B and B2C segments. He began his tenure at Sodexo in 1998 in Australia. In 2004, he was appointed the Managing Director of Singapore. In 2006, he became the CEO of Sodexo India and was also the head of Sodexo Australia between 2009 and 2015. More recently, as CEO of Sodexo Mining Worldwide, Sodexo signed a 10 year contract with Rio Tinto, the largest contract in Sodexo’s history. Since September 2017, he is the Region Chair of Asia Pacific and the Country President for Singapore. In the region, he is responsible for the success of the ‘Better Tomorrow 2025’, Sodexo’s Corporate Responsibility roadmap with concrete commitments and targets in support of the UN SDGs and a thought-leadership that focuses on hunger, gender, and waste.

   

Singapore’s Integrated Waste Management Strategies

Abstract
Over the past three decades, waste disposed in Singapore has increased 7-fold in the past 45 years in tandem with the growing population and economy. Land for waste disposal infrastructure is limited and our only landfill is an offshore landfill for non-incinerable waste. To address the waste challenge, NEA has implemented an Integrated Waste Management system and put in place programmes to minimise waste and increase recycling. This presentation will share on NEA’s policies and programmes:

- Waste Hierarchy approach where waste minimisation and recycling are key priorities to reduce solid waste
- Discussion of various recycling programmes for households and industries
- Waste to Energy strategy to reduce volume of waste for disposal
- Long term planning, implementation of policies and infrastructure to ensure longer term environmental sustainability for Singapore.

Ms Carrie Wong is Manager of Planning & Development in the Waste and Resource Management Department of the National Environment Agency. She has more than 10 years of experience working in the field on environmental protection. Her current responsibilities include formulating and promoting policies on waste minimization and recycling, particularly in the area of food waste management.

   
Introduction on Singapore Standardisation Programme and Standards on Food Waste Reduction

Abstract
Spring Singapore has appointed SMF-SDO to administer standards development work on four industry-led Standards Committees. Standards is one of the key pillars to build trust in Singapore products, services and enterprises to drive economic growth. In Singapore, food waste is a growing problem where 791 million kg was generated in 2016. Only 14% of the food waste generated was recycled while the rest was sent for incineration. This is not sustainable for Singapore in the long run. With food waste reduction management in place, it increases Singapore’s resistance to price fluctuations in imported raw agricultural materials and will help Singapore to be more sustainable. Furthermore, waste reduction through Standards allows food processing/manufacturing establishments to save money on commodities, labour, energy and disposal costs.

Tan Shiuh Ming is the General Manager for SMF-Standards Development Organisation, where she oversees standards development work. Shiuh Ming is with SMF-SDO since 2013. Under her guidance, there have at least 40 standards been reviewed or developed per year and at least 100 outreach activities organised in these 4 years.

   
Food Waste Management – Introducing a Methodology for Tackling Food Waste in Singapore's F&B Industry

In 2016, about 791 million kg of food waste was generated in Singapore. This is almost enough to feed every person in Singapore two meals a day for the whole year. To make matters worse, only 14% of the food waste was recycled. In this talk, Dr Jonathan S.C. Low will be sharing about a methodology underlying the new Singapore Standards that will help the Singapore F&B industry to tackle the food waste problem.

Jonathan Low is a Scientist at A*STAR’s Singapore Institute of Manufacturing Technology (SIMTech). He has over 10 years of experience in the field of life cycle engineering and has been involved in numerous sustainability-related R&D and consultancy projects over the years. Jonathan’s current interest is in developing new methodologies, techniques and decision support tools that can help companies better manage and improve their resource efficiency.

   
Water Efficiency in the Non-Domestic Sector

Singapore has a robust and sustainable water supply from the Four National Taps. As our population and economy continue to grow, we need to ensure that the demand for water does not rise at an unsustainable rate. Water demand in Singapore is currently about 430 million gallons a day but could likely double by 2060. As PUB continues to build on water infrastructure and expand capacities, everyone is encouraged to play their part and make water conservation a way of life. Organisations are encouraged to adopt the Reduce, Replace and Reuse approach and utilise PUB’s Water Efficiency Fund to seek out efficient ways to manage their water demands.

Mr Tan Kai Rong is an Engineer of PUB's Water Supply Network in water demand management. He specialises in mechanical engineering and has conducted various training courses on water conservation matters for licensed plumbers, green mark managers and Water Efficiency Course participants. During his 3 years in PUB, he has worked with and assisted customers from various sectors (shipyards, food and beverage manufacturing, precision engineering, country clubs, poultry, transport) to implement water conservation measures such as remote metering and recycling. 

   
Advanced Active Actions Towards Realisation of both Pollution Reduction and Value Addition

Abstract
Waste water treatment and manufacturing cost control conflict to each other in all of industrial processes. Waste water treatment is always a passive action as it does not bring any benefits to the manufacturers. At the same time, the manufacturers have to treat the waste produced due to the regulations set by governmental authorities. By upgrading existing conventional separation technologies to advanced separation technologies, such as membrane technology, Keysino achieves both pollution reduction and value addition for its clients. Pollution control has now became a profitable strategy.

Li Dongfei has been working in the field of membrane and membrane applications since 1985. From 1985 to 1995, he worked in Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences with the background of chemical engineering. From 1996 to 2003, he worked in National University of Singapore, Material Lab in IBM, Institute of Materials Research and Engineering and Institute of Environmental Science and Engineering. His main focus was the study of hollow fiber membranes and membrane processes in gas and liquid separation. He joined Hyflux as a Senior Research Scientist after graduation from National University of Singapore in 2004. He was then promoted to Vice President in 2006. He joined Keysino Separation Technology in March 2017 as a Vice President and Chief Scientist. His roles are R&D and business development.

   

Water Efficiency Improvement in Manufacturing Processes

With increasing of water demand in Singapore especially for non-domestic and insufficient nature water supply, industry partners are driven to improve water efficiency. This talk will give a brief introduction to SIMTech’s recent developments in Water Efficiency Initiative: 1) Water Efficiency Management, including in-process water recycling and toxic wastewater treatment 2) Electro-Advanced Oxidation Processes (E-AOP) for Treatment of Concentrated Organic Wastewater and 3) High Performance Ceramic Membranes for Wastewater Treatment.

Mr. Liu Fengmin received his BEng from Beihang University and MEng from National University of Singapore. He has more than 20 years of industry and R&D experience in electrochemical processes, including immersion, electroless and electrolytic plating on various substrates such as plastics, metals and ceramic. He is currently a Initiative Lead for Water Efficiency Management in Singapore Institute of Manufacturing Technology.

   

Treatment and Converting Organic Wastes into Organic Fertiliser

With increasing population more organic wastes being generated worldwide. Traditional methods for handling such wastes are based on landfilling and incineration. These methods have limitations in terms of space and emission problems. Hence many countries rely on composting that can take up to 3 months to treat. Biomax Green introduce a 24 hrs thermophilic method to treat and convert any organic wastes into organic fertiliser fit for organic farming. The product is rich in nutrients essential for plant growth and is free of offensive smell and harmful pathogens. Todate our technology has been used to treat animal dung, abattior, agricultural and food wastes in more than 20 countries.

Dr Puah Chum Mok, Chief Technology Officer of Bioamx Green Pte Ltd, was educated in UK and received his PhD from London University. He also worked in various research institutions in the UK. Dr Puah Chum Mok worked as production manager in a biotech company manufacturing medical diagnostic test kits and subsequently joined Singapore Polytechnic to teach and manage a biotechnology course. After retiring from his academia stint, he started a biotech company specialising in treating organic wastes.

   
Going Global with Processed Waste Wood Manufacturing

LHT is a public listed company and pallet leader in its industry that was established in 1977 as a saw-miller, timber stockists, and wooden pallet manufacturer. As a logistics support provider for supply chain, in 2005, LHT has initiated in using processed waste wood for its manufacturing of “Innovative Processed Product Conversion (IPPC)” pallets. The IPPC pallets used 50% to 100% technical wood (an engineered compressed wood made from waste wood material). Over a decade, the sales of IPPC pallets is at the surge compared to natural wood pallets as it gained recognition in its colour consistency, pest-free, lower carbon footprint, environmental friendly, exempted from heat-treatment and compliance to ISPM 15.

Thomas Yeo joined LHT Holdings since 2005. Prior to joining LHT, he served 7 years with Singapore Navy and held the position as a marine operation manager with 15-years sea experience. At LHT, he is responsible for transformation of its company’s traditional practice to new generation, where an understanding of the current internal and external environments is developed by adopting emerging projects to enhance LHT’s strategy and business plan development. He also served as GM for its subsidiary Kim Hiap Lee (KHL), a ECR RFID pallet leasing company. Thomas is a pioneer graduate of SIMTech’s PE WSQ Graduate Diploma in Manufacturing Operation Management and was in the pioneer batch of SIMTech’s PE WSQ Carbon Management Programme. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Supply Chain Management from Northumbria University, an Advanced Diploma in Logistics & SCM (Singapore Institute of Commerce) and a Diploma in Business Computing (MDIS).

Under his leadership, Impetus offers recycling and shredding services in presenting their clients with ideas and solutions in waste management as well as encouraging and building up the foundations of the 3R practices. Today, these ideas and solutions are widely used in top hotels, banks, offices and agencies.
