Machining is the cutting edge of manufacturing industry and its productivity ignited the industry revolution. Machining technology is recognised as one of the key manufacturing technologies for the latest and next generation high-tech products and parts. To meet the rising demands for high precision machining of parts and materials, new high precision machine tools are put into the market. This lecture is designed to introduce some of the novel machine tools developed in Japan and the recent advances in the machining technology. Participants will gain a better understanding of the practical applications of the technology illustrated with some examples. This lecture is organised by SIMTech's Machining Technology Group and Precision Engineering Centre of Innovation.
About the Speaker
Dr Toshimichi Moriwaki graduated from Kyoto University with a doctorate degree in Engineering based on dissertation of “Fundamental Study on Cutting Process Dynamics and Machining Chatter Control”. He worked at Kyoto University for 40 years as a Professor Emeritus. He is currently the Dean and Professor of Faculty of Engineering, Setsunan University. His research interests include intelligent manufacturing systems and machine tools, ultra-precision machining and machine tools, dynamics and thermal behaviour of machine tools, sensor technology in manufacturing, and human factors in manufacturing. Professor Moriwaki is a fellow of the International Academy for Production Engineering (CIRP), Japan Society for Precision Engineering (JSPE), and Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers (JSME), and a member of ASME, euspen, ASPE, EAJ, SCJ, JSE, ADMT and RSJ. He also served as Council Member of CIRP, Vice President of JSPE, and Editor in Chief of International Journal “Precision Engineering”. Professor Moriwaki received a numbers of award, such as F.W. Taylor – Medaille Award of CIRP, Lifetime Achievement Award of euspen, Takagi Award and Precision Engineering Award of JSPE, Frederick W. Taylor Research Medal Award of SME, Iue Award of Cultural Merit of Iue Foundation, Hyogo Prefecture Science Award, Machine Tool Technology Promotion Award and Distinguished Service Award in Industrial Promotion from Mayor of Kobe City.
