The launch of the Optics Rapid Prototyping (ORP) Centre of Wavelength Opto-Electronic Singapore marks the company’s growth and transformation. Wavelength designs, manufactures and distributes laser optics, optical modules and inspection systems for the global market.

Wavelength Collaborations with A*STAR SIMTech
Wavelength collaborates with SIMTech since 2007 when a technology development framework was established through the SIMTech Operation and Technology Roadmap (OTR) programme. This roadmap guided its transformation from being a producer of optics components to a manufacturer of high-value solutions.

Over the years, Wavelength engaged SIMTech in many projects. A joint project to automate contact lens inspection system significantly increase the speed of the manufacturing inspection process on production floor. Other projects include curved lens surface measurement development, operational projects to streamline work processes through LEAN as well as strategy planning to validate Wavelength’s existing roadmap. These projects have resulted in the development of new technology capabilities as well as creating new business opportunities for Wavelength. In 2018, another major research collaboration agreement was signed between Wavelength and SIMTech to develop freeform optics design, manufacturing and inspection technologies to meet emerging industry needs.

Significance of Optics Rapid Prototyping Centre
The more than US$2 million ORP Centre is a far-sighted investment. It is established to meet Wavelength’s customer needs worldwide for quick delivery of small prototyping volume for their new products. In supporting its customer’s growing requirements, Wavelength aims to expand its business domain in the future. Through this Centre, Wavelength works together with the relevant societies, trade associations, customers and suppliers to offer optics customisations and solutions in Singapore and the region.

The vision is to make this R&D facility an optics centre in Singapore for integrating optics design, manufacturing, test and measurement, system integration and other applications. The ORP Centre houses Wavelength’s modern optics manufacturing line comprising equipment for optical components grinding, CNC programmable polishing, diamond turning, glass moulding, surface coating, and optical inspection. SIMTech is in collaboration with Wavelength to develop new innovative products and boost ORP capabilities to address growing market needs.

This Centre creates value for industry and Singapore. The state-of-the-art facility will provide Wavelength with the capabilities to catalyse partnerships with companies to develop exciting new products for the industry. It has also generated new jobs, employing 8 new staff for this Centre.
