Professor Chong Tow Chong

Professor Chong Tow Chong is the President and Acting Provost of the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) established in collaboration with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). As SUTD’s founding Provost, Prof Chong plays an instrumental role in steering the strategic development and operationalisation of SUTD, including the educational curriculum, pedagogy, faculty recruitment, research programmes, industry collaboration, student admissions and campus development. As President, Prof Chong will provide leadership, guidance and oversight in the next phase of the University’s growth and development, as well as ensuring continuity in the pursuit of SUTD’s vision, mission and strategic goals.
Prior to his appointment at SUTD, Prof Chong was the Executive Director of A*STAR’s Science & Engineering Research Council (SERC) and Executive Director of the Data Storage Institute (DSI). His portfolio included maintaining the strategic oversight of the seven research institutes under SERC and spearheading the science and engineering research agenda to develop capabilities to support the current and future needs of Singapore’s industry.
Prof Chong has spent much of his professional career teaching and doing research in semiconductor materials and devices for high-speed optoelectronics applications. He is also active in the international research community and serves as member of Technical Program Committees of key conferences in his field of research. Concurrent to his appointment in A*STAR, Prof Chong held a dual appointment as a Professor with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the National University of Singapore (NUS). He authored and co-authored more than 700 publications in international refereed journals, presented more than 30 invited talks and registered 25 patents.
Prof Chong received numerous educational and research awards such as the President’s Science and Technology Medal in 2010, the Public Administration Medal (Silver) in the National Day Awards in 2004 and the Teaching Excellence Award from the NUS Engineering Faculty in 1994. He was awarded the IES-IEEE Joint Medal of Excellence Award in 2013 and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, ISPS Division Leadership in Research and Development Award 2014. Prof Chong has also served as a board member in a number of key public service agencies including A*STAR, Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS), and Defence Science and Technology Agency (DSTA, Singapore).
Prof Chong has a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering (B.Eng) degree from the Tokyo Institute of Technology, a Masters in Electrical Engineering (M.Eng) degree from the National University of Singapore and a Doctor of Science (ScD) in Electrical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He was awarded the President’s Scholarship and the Japanese Government Scholarship for his undergraduate studies and the NUS Overseas graduate scholarship for his graduate studies. He also attended the Advanced Management Program at the Harvard Business School in 2003.
