About A*STAR’s Future of Manufacturing Initiative

What is Future of Manufacturing

In late 2015, the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) initiated a Future of Manufacturing (FoM) Initiative, in close consultation with the Ministry of Trade and Industry (MTI), the Economic Development Board (EDB) Singapore and SPRING Singapore, under the government’s Research, Innovation & Enterprise 2020 plan. The deliberations involved extensive engagement with industry and the trade associations.

The goal is to sustain Singapore’s competitiveness in manufacturing and technology innovation, so that it is a location of choice for developing, test-bedding and deploying advanced cutting-edge technologies in the manufacturing sector.

The 3 key thrusts of A*STAR’s FoM Initiative are the public-private partnership platforms of Tech Access, Tech Depot and Model Factories, that aim to drive technology innovation, knowledge transfer and adoption across the manufacturing industry.

Tech Access

A*STAR Tech Access
Tech Access provides companies especially local SMEs to A*STAR’s installed base of advanced manufacturing facilities, equipment and training expertise. The aim is to help local enterprises, especially SMEs, to build capabilities in advanced manufacturing through the use of advance machine tools, new processes, prototyping and testing. With these capabilities, the companies can then go on to acquire the relevant equipment to capture new business opportunities.

Tech Depot

A*STAR Tech Depot
Tech Depot offers SMEs a suite of easy-to-use technologies that can help them to improve productivity. This is a new addition to the SME Portal that went live on 20 Apr 2017. It will showcase ready-to-go (RTG) packaged solutions such as inventory-tracking and business process automation systems.

Model Factories

A*STAR Model Factory
A Model Factory has been established at A*STAR's Singapore Institute of Manufacturing Technology (SIMTech). A second model factory will be opened at A*STAR’s Advanced Remanufacturing and Technology Centre (ARTC) in 2018.

The Model Factory @ ARTC will be a Factory of the Future platform for companies investing in advanced manufacturing processes with a focus in coupling smart and virtual (i.e. Digital Twin) capabilities. Target end users include larger enterprises and MNCs in heavy engineering such as the Aerospace sector. The features of Model Factory@ARTC include a virtual production line for companies to model their product design and development before commencing work on a physical prototype.

The Model Factory @ SIMTech will encompass a digital Learning Factory platform particularly for companies at the beginning of their FoM journey. A key feature of Model Factory@SIMTech is the live pilot-scale production line which will demonstrate how advanced manufacturing technologies operate in a real-life environment.

Future of Manufacturing Technologies

Besides the creation of the above public private partnership platforms, the development of R&D programmes was also identified as a critical thrust in creating differentiation. The programmes were guided by the areas identified in the technology roadmapping exercise and prioritised in consultation with the economic agencies. The identified horizontal technology enablers are as follows:
  • Industrial Internet of Things & Digital Manufacturing
  • Artificial Intelligence in Manufacturing
  • Robotics & Automation
  • Additive Manufacturing
  • Advanced Materials

In September 2017, A*STAR organised the Future of Manufacturing (FoM) Singapore, with support of Economic Development Board (EDB) Singapore and SPRING Singapore. The Future of Manufacturing (FoM) Singapore is a series of industry events related to advanced manufacturing. The FoM Singapore underscores Singapore’s leadership in advanced manufacturing in the region, and its commitment to sustain Singapore’s competitiveness in manufacturing, and become a technology innovation hub for manufacturing.
