1. Singapore Autonomous Vehicle Initiative (SAVI)
The Singapore Autonomous Vehicle Initiative (SAVI) is a joint partnership between LTA and A*STAR, aimed at providing a technical platform for industry partners and stakeholders to conduct Research & Development and test-bedding of Autonomous Vehicles (AVs) technology, applications and solutions. This programme builds on A*STAR capabilities in image & video analytics. With AVs, residents can simply opt for car sharing rather than car ownership and actively contribute to making Singapore a greener and safer city. That is the vision A*STAR is working towards and we are already making great strides in this development.
A*STAR’s Institute for Infocomm Research (I2R) is in the process of developing an AV Bus – a driverless bus for a mass transport service that operates on fixed routes and scheduled timings that can mitigate manpower constraints for bus services. One-north has been identified as the first test-bed for AVs.
2. National Supercomputing Centre (NSCC)
The National Supercomputing Centre (NSCC) Singapore was established in 2015 and manages Singapore’s first national petascale facility with available High Performance Computing (HPC) resources to support science and engineering computing needs for academic, research and industry communities. NSCC’s petascale facility is linked by Singapore Advanced Research Education Network’s (SingAREN’s) high bandwidth multi-gigabit networks (STAR-N) to provide high speed access to users everywhere locally and globally. Four geographically distributed campuses with remote login nodes are interconnected by InfiniBand with bandwidths (of at least 40Gbps) to enable access to the compute and storage nodes of the petascale facility. 3. IHPC-Rolls-Royce Computational Engineering Lab
Established in 2011, the Computational Engineering Lab (CEL) was jointly set up by the Institute of High Performance Computing (IHPC) and Rolls-Royce. The CEL leverages IHPC’s expertise in model based engineering, parallel and distributed computing, and geometry modelling expertise to develop capabilities in the following areas:
- Intelligent systems that extract domain insights and reduce manual intervention by automating the iterative and complex engineering workflow;
- Systems that assist Rolls-Royce to rapidly process large-scale and high-dimensional data to improve their computational performance and efficiency; and
- State-of-the-art methodology to identify trends for preventive actions by monitoring real-time streaming data from machineries.
4. Partnership with ERS Industries
ERS Industries specialises in the manufacturing of innovative housing systems for server cabinets and racks. The SME was interested to develop a rack that could efficiently disperse the built-up heat generated from the equipment. Leveraging A*STAR’s thermal optimisation analysis and modelling and simulation expertise, the ERS-IHPC partnership developed an improved lightweight rack structure, E@Rack, that boasts reinforced strength and enhanced thermal capacity. The new rack helps data centres save approximately 25% more energy needed for cooling compared to current conventional server racks, and has helped ERS Industries achieve an exponential revenue growth in the Asia Pacific and global market.
