Welding plays an important role and has grown substantially in almost all manufacturing sectors. The needs for superior welding technologies and robotised process automation have increased in step with the demands for a wide variety of performances such as high productivity, high quality, as well as labour and cost savings. However, there is a shortage of qualiﬁed welding professionals in many industry sectors, and this programme will help to meet such demands.
This programme is designed to provide participants with an integrated approach to learn about the various aspects of welding and allied technologies, and a quick and eﬀective guide to executing welding operation and inspection, welding procedure development, weld design and simulation, troubleshooting and welding quality control. Ultimately, the participants will be trained to be competitive welding professionals. This module will introduce fusion and solid-state welding processes such as arc welding, laser welding, electron beam welding, friction stir welding, brazing, resistance welding and ultrasonic welding. The process principle, procedure, equipment, and quality control will be dealt with for the speciﬁc techniques. Project-based case studies will be discussed to oﬀer participants a more in-depth understanding of the techniques and how to implement them in real industrial applications.
Arc welding techniques have been widely used in almost all manufacturing industries. This module will provide comprehensive training on diﬀerent arc welding processes, such as Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) Welding, Metal Inert Gas (MIG) Welding, Plasma Arc Welding (PAW), Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW), Flux Cored Arc Welding (FCAW), and Submerged Arc Welding (SAW). The course will also cover the welding metallurgy and weldability of various materials such as aluminium, titanium, and nickel alloys, low alloy steels, and stainless steels. Project-based case studies will be carried out to allow participants to practise the applications of arc welding for diﬀerent materials.
This module provides participants with fundamental knowledge of laser welding, laser cladding, and laser aided additive manufacturing, process simulation and modelling, as well as process monitoring and control. Material selection, metallurgy, welding processes and materials characterisation linked to industrial applications are included in this module. Participants will acquire knowledge and skills on laser welding, cladding and additive manufacturing technologies that use laser as a heat source for material processing. This module also provides project-based case studies to enhance the adoption of technologies in real industrial situations.
This module aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the basics of weld design, welding symbols, welding distortion control, evaluation of welded joint mechanical properties, diﬀerent weldability testing methods, inspection of welded joints, and Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) methods. The module will train the participants in the implementation of welding quality control. Participants will also learn the essential skills and knowledge of welding procedure development and documentation. The discussion of project-based case studies will equip participants with appropriate knowledge and skills to plan real welding operation scenarios, for various applications.
This module covers the methods for planning, executing and managing projects for developing technology, products and processes. Participants will also be taught on applications of project planning tools and skills for managing uncertainties and disruptions in project activities. Human, ﬁnancial and business factors that inﬂuence the conduct of projects will be considered and explored.
This module provides participants with the fundamental knowledge of industrial robots for implementation. It provides practical industrial training such as robotic system set-up and programming, robot safety and standards, as well as the localisation and navigation technologies of mobile robots. Participants will be guided through the process of developing and executing real-world industrial projects for acquiring the competencies of planning for robotics systems.
This module covers a set of methodologies of conducting problem-solving using the data mining approach, which includes data collection, pre-process data from multiple sources, cleaning of the data, and ﬁnally using data mining techniques to analyse the data and ﬁnd out hidden correlations among various parameters involved in processes. Through extensive hands-on and discussion of successful case studies, the course will equip participants with the ability to use data mining techniques to solve actual industrial problems.
This module is designed to provide extensive hands-on practise training on basic skills and competencies on various welding and joining processes, such as TIG & MIG welding, laser welding & cladding, friction stir welding, resistance welding, ultrasonic welding, and brazing. The participants will be also trained to develop the welding procedure speciﬁcations (WPS), program the automated welding and cladding processes, monitor the processes and evaluate the welded joints by various destructive and non-destructive inspection methods. The module consists of 40 sessions (120 hours in total) which will provide the participants with the opportunity to learn the set-up and operation of the process equipment and analytical instruments in SIMTech labs to enhance their knowledge learned from the other technical skills modules.
The project-based modules provide opportunities for the participants to embark on an industry project either in-house at SIMTech or work with a participating company.
