ABOUT THE A*STAR-WMG ENGD PROGRAMME

The A*STAR-University of Warwick Engineering Doctorate Partnership (AWP) provides a more industry-oriented doctorate compared to the traditional PhD. 

The four-year scholarship programme with University of Warwick comprises two years of studies at Warwick Manufacturing Group (WMG) in the UK, and two years of research-based studies in an A*STAR research institute.

The programme will help candidates  develop vital skill sets  in innovative thinking, rigorous analysis and good management practices to be a step ahead of the competition.  Programme themes include aspects of manufacturing significant to the economy, such as 3D additive layer manufacturing, big data analytics, biomedical manufacturing, and robotics.

EngD candidates are evaluated on their portfolio, which comprises coursework, project reports, publications and a personal profile that demonstrate their innovation and project leadership abilities.

WARWICK MANUFACTURING GROUP

ELIGIBILITY

Applicants must:

  • Be Singaporeans and other nationals intending to take up Singapore citizenship
  • Satisfy criteria for EngD admission to University of Warwick
  • Have obtained, or are on track to obtain, at least a 2nd Upper Class Honours in a relevant discipline
  • Applicants who are in the last semester of their final year of undergraduate studies are welcome to apply; however, successful candidates will only be awarded the scholarship if they obtain at least a 2nd Upper Class Honours or equivalent results that meet A*STAR’s requirements
  • Not be concurrently holding any other scholarships or fellowships

Other requirements:

  • Successful candidates are required to undergo a one-year research attachment at an A*STAR research institute prior to their PhD studies

A*STAR may include additional selection criteria based on prevailing scholarship policies. These policies may be amended from time to time without notice.

COVERAGE

Successful applicants will be given the following support* for up to 4 years:

  • Monthly overseas living allowance
  • Monthly sustenance allowance, inclusive of CPF contribution (where applicable)
  • Full tuition fees
  • Other allowances including
    • Computer allowance
    • Thesis allowance
    • Conference allowance

*All rates/allowances are subject to adjustments by A*STAR from time to time

SERVICE COMMITMENT

Upon completion of the EngD programme, applicants will return to contribute to an A*STAR research institute for a service commitment period of three (3) years.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE

Applications for the AWP EngD Programme can be made in two ways:

  • Through WMG - for admission as a Research Student, indicating on the application form an interest in the AWP Scholarship Programme
  • Through A*STAR - Click here to apply. Please observe the instructions indicated.

Successful candidates are required to complete a 1-year Research Attachment (RA) at an A*STAR research institute prior to their PhD studies. Applicants will need to factor in this RA requirement when planning for university admission.
