BIOMANUFACTURING
Biomanufacturing constitutes a critical pillar in Singapore’s economy and has much potential to be further strengthened through innovation. With A*STAR’s relevant expertise in digitalisation, manufacturing and many more, Singapore can
strategically leverage our capabilities to drive the local industry for the future by addressing resource sustainability, diversification of supply and logistic chains, and consumer demand for highly personalised and affordable drugs
which are low volume/highly potent.
The Biomanufacturing Cluster serves as an enabling platform for local stakeholders to leverage the strengths, expertise and resources of our research community, public agencies and private sector partners. With the guiding aim of
promoting research and development to realise cutting edge, feasible breakthroughs in small molecule and biologics manufacturing technologies which can be employed to increase operational efficiencies, the Cluster takes a collaborative
approach and works closely with like-minded stakeholders in the ecosystem.
The flagship initiative – Pharma Innovation Programme Singapore (PIPS) – is an exemplar of our efforts. PIPS is an industry-led platform which aims to synergistically and strategically bring together public sector research capabilities and domain expertise of the pharmaceutical industry to enhance the productivity and operational efficiency within Singapore’s pharmaceutical sector through leveraging novel manufacturing technologies and data analytics. The current workstreams within PIPS include Biocatalysis, Con tinuous Manufacturing, Digital Factory, Particle Engineering and Plant Operations. Looking to the future, the 10-year vision of PIPS lies in shared platforms centred on analytics, advanced process control, digitalisation, automation, supply chain and logistics.
Talent development in the context of recruitment, training and retention remains a main thrust, as competent and skilled workers, innovators and leaders are needed for any industry to thrive. As the technical horizon shifts in trends,
skillsets have to be constantly reviewed to keep the workforce relevant and competent. The Cluster actively sources for opportunities to bridge this gap within the industry. With a future-ready workforce which is well-trained in
emerging manufacturing technologies, Singapore will have a competitive advantage on the global stage.
