Powering Partnerships, Building for Impact
line 05 Nov 2025 15 Anniversary

On 5 November 2025, BMSIPO commemorated its 15th Anniversary. The celebration brought together more than 150 attendees from industry, Institutes of Higher Learning (IHLs), public sector research and clinical institutions, government agencies, national platforms, and BMSIPO members both past and present. The turnout underscored BMSIPO’s sustained commitment to forging strategic academic–industry collaborations that strengthen Singapore’s position as a leading biomedical hub regionally and globally.

Forging Strong Partnerships for Impact

In his remarks, Guest-of-Honour Professor Tan Chorh Chuan, Permanent Secretary (National Research and Development), congratulated BMSIPO on its 15 years of contribution to advancing biomedical research and innovation in Singapore.

Notably, Prof Tan emphasised the importance of partnership and translation in advancing Singapore’s biomedical landscape. “Our biomedical science sector has now progressed to the stage where we can, and we must, do even more to translate novel research discoveries into useful health solutions and beneficial real-world impact,” he said.

He noted that achieving this requires continual collaboration across universities, medical schools, A*STAR, healthcare clusters, public research institutes and industry – partnerships that BMSIPO has brought to fruition. “BMSIPO has played a key role in catalysing and facilitating such academic–industry partnerships since its establishment 15 years ago.”

15 Years of Driving Collaboration and Innovation

Since its inception, BMSIPO has catalysed collaborations with more than 200 industrial partners, from homegrown biotech and medtech companies to leading global pharmaceutical and medical technology MNCs, with over $800 million in industry co-investment.

In the past five years, one in three projects facilitated by BMSIPO has brought together multiple stakeholders, reflecting its unique role in connecting research, healthcare, and industry partners to accelerate biomedical innovation. These collaborations have enhanced local capabilities, advanced translation, and reinforced Singapore’s reputation as a trusted hub for biomedical innovation.

Architecting Successful Partnerships

Reflecting on BMSIPO’s journey, Seck Yee Kwang, Director of BMSIPO, shared three key ingredients that have guided the office in architecting successful partnerships:

  • Knowing Our Stakeholders – Understanding demand drivers and industry R&D priorities, and mapping them to Singapore’s areas of excellence and hidden strengths to spark synergies

  • Developing Long-term “Win–Win” Partnerships – Building sustained models that bring partners together across the innovation value chain, from lab to market.

  • Creating Impact – Translating early discoveries into products and solutions that improve health outcomes, while growing and anchoring companies through R&D in Singapore.

Looking Ahead

As BMSIPO marks this milestone, it extends its heartfelt appreciation to partners across industry, public sector research performers and agencies, BMSIPO members past and present. Building on its strong foundation, BMSIPO remains committed to deepening partnerships that drive biomedical innovation and deliver meaningful impact.

Happy 15th Anniversary, BMSIPO!
