A*STAR CFAR Research Fund

The A*STAR's Centre for Frontier AI Research (CFAR) is happy to announce the launch of A*STAR CFAR Research Fund and A*STAR CFAR Early Career Research Fund. Both schemes offer opportunities to empower exceptional researchers to independently pursue exciting new directions in and push the boundaries of advanced fundamental AI research, alongside similarly outstanding scientific talent with excellent research track records in top-tier AI conferences and journals. 

CFAR is currently led and advised by IEEE Fellows Prof Ivor Tsang (Director, CFAR) and Prof Ong Yew Soon (Chief AI Scientist, A*STAR) respectively. 

A*STAR CFAR Research Fund

Successful candidates will be awarded: 

  • Opportunity to independently lead their own research group through a start-up research grant* over 3 years
  • Join a vibrant community of AI researchers through (i) Supervising PhD students from a pool of talented A*STAR graduate scholars and (ii) AI3 membership
  • Relocation assistance & long-term contracts with gratuity

*To cover a team of 3-5 researchers, including equipment and other expenses

Who can apply?

Applicants should

  • Have a PhD degree at minimum and ideally a postdoctoral degree or equivalent.
  • Possess a strong publication records in top-tier conferences and journals, and in areas of Artificial Intelligence such as machine learning, reinforcement learning, visual intelligence, human-centric AI, cybersecurity, Natural Language Processing or cognitive modelling.

A*STAR CFAR Early Career Research Fund

Successful candidates will be awarded: 

  • Opportunity to conduct independent research through a start-up research grant* over 2 years
  • Join a vibrant community of AI researchers through AI3 membership
  • Relocation assistance & long-term contracts with gratuity

*To cover a team of 2-3 researchers, including equipment and other expenses

Who can apply?

Applicants should

  • Have a PhD degree at minimum, obtained within the last 5 years, i.e., in 2017 onwards.
  • Possess a strong publication records in top-tier conferences and journals, and in areas of Artificial Intelligence such as machine learning, reinforcement learning, visual intelligence, human-centric AI, cybersecurity, natural language processing (NLP) or cognitive modelling.


CFAR is also looking for AI researchers with biomedical and healthcare background and expertise. We welcome outstanding AI researchers to join our team, in collaboration with Biomedical Research Council (BMRC). 

Candidates with strong records in other AI fields will also be considered.
