PROF LIU JIAN JUN APPOINTED GIS EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Distinguished Institute Fellow, Professor Liu Jian Jun, was appointed the Acting Executive Director of the Genome Institute of Singapore (GIS) effective 1 July 2023.

Prof Liu joined GIS as a Senior Research Scientist in 2002. He was appointed as a Group Leader in 2007, and subsequently as a Senior Group Leader in 2010. In 2017, Prof Liu became GIS’ Deputy Executive Director. Prof Liu has contributed significantly to building technical capabilities and infrastructure for high-throughput genomic analyses at GIS that have empowered the whole research community in Singapore. Prof Liu helped to build strategic partnerships with the local clinical and industrial communities.

Prof Liu has established a high quality and competitive research programme in human genetics, and is highly recognised as a leader in Asia. Prof Liu has published over 400 papers that were well cited by research community (H-index 95, Web of Science 2020), and was recognised by Thomson Reuters as one of ‘The World’s Most Influential Scientific Minds’ in 2015. For his contributions to the genetics of Asian populations, Prof Liu was awarded the ‘Chen Young Investigator Award’ by the Human Genome Organization in 2011, and the ‘President’s Science Award’ of Singapore in 2020.

Prof Liu, together with the management team, will build on the strong foundations laid, and lead GIS onto greater heights.

Effective 1 July 2023, Prof Patrick Tan relinquished his position as Executive Director (ED) of GIS, to take on the role of Senior Vice-Dean for Research at Duke-NUS, and Senior Scientific Advisor, Group Research, at SingHealth.

Under Prof Tan’s leadership as ED, GIS became one of the top regional institutions for genomics research, development of precision medicine and paving the way for new advances in genomic medicine and cancer therapy.

Prof Tan continues to contribute to A*STAR in the capacity of Chief Scientific Officer, GIS. As its Chief Scientific Officer, Prof Tan will work with the GIS leadership team to provide guidance to formulate GIS Research and Development strategy through promoting A*STAR’s
