Senior/Scientist (Empathetic Systems), Social and Cognitive Computing, IHPC

Job description:

The Affective and Social Intelligence Group focuses on developing and applying new intelligent systems that are capable of recognizing emotions from multi-modal visual and non-visual (voice, language) cues. To attain to a new height of our research impact, we seek to pursue advanced research building next-generation machine intelligence incorporating socio-technical considerations including but not limited to empathy, value, goal and strategy. Our research is highly interdisciplinary, and we seek to establish leadership in the intersection area of Empathy AI, Affective Computing and Computational Social Science.

The candidate will assume the responsibility as a lead researcher who shall contribute to the architecture and systems development, and lead in research activities including critical literature review, theoretical analyses, appropriation and evaluation of these systems in potential applications. The candidate will also have opportunities to work closely with the lead investigators, research scientists and engineers, collaborators and experts from the industry partners, to engage in both the basic research as well as translational research activities that bring the research outcomes into real-world impact.

Job requirements:
  • A PhD degree in Computer Science / Information Technology / Computer Engineering / Information Systems / Computational Social Science or equivalent
  • A compelling scientific publication track record and demonstrable independent research capabilities

Senior/Scientist, Social & Cognitive Computing, IHPC

The Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) has set up a new Social Sciences and Technology Horizontal Technology Programme. The Programme, to be hosted in the Institute of High Performance Computing (IHPC), will focus on integrating social scientific principles with other disciplines, leveraging on technology, and channeling efforts towards impactful, translational research.

Our key research domains include:

  • Health and wellbeing: Examining the social and psychological determinants of health and well-being, such as health disparities, effects of modern societies and technology on health attitudes and behaviours, or application of technology for health communication/intervention.
  • Social sensing: Measuring psychological or behavioural variables such as attitudes, personality or identity, and/or examining their implications for socially-relevant outcomes such as trust, cohesion, and misinformation susceptibility.
  • Education: Using social and behavioural science or technological innovations to improve learning, motivation, cognitive flexibility, or social-emotional competencies, whether in the context of adult skill training or classroom-based teaching.
  • Urban sustainability and solutions: Integrating cognitive and behavioural effects to better model urban decision making and dynamics and ultimately improve urban environments and enhance residents' quality of life (e.g., enable seniors to better age in place).

The Programme is seeking experienced candidates in the area of social sciences or socially-focused computational sciences with clear relevance to the above research domains. Selected candidates will be entrusted to define, lead and conduct innovative research, aimed at developing and deploying scientifically-informed solutions to societal issues. Successful candidates will have the opportunity to excel in a fast-paced environment through developing unique or unconventional capabilities that integrate knowledge in the social sciences with computational approaches.

Suitable candidates should meet the following criteria:

  • A PhD from a reputable university in a socially or behaviourally relevant area. Possible disciplines include, but are not limited to: social psychology, cognitive psychology, quantitative psychology / psychometrics, computational social science, behaviourally-orientated computation (e.g. mobile sensing, behavioural modelling or analytics, activity recognition)
  • Post-PhD work experience initiating and leading research programmes, whether in academia or industry
  • A compelling scientific track record and experience, commensurate with career stage
  • The ability to contribute to one or more of the four research domains listed above.

The following characteristics would be highly desirable in a candidate:

  • Demonstrated ability, experience, and prior success in initiating, leading, and completing competitively funded research programmes.
  • Experience working across disciplines (especially collaborations between social and computational sciences) and / or developing solutions to applied societal problems.
  • Willingness to undertake hands-on development work in rapid prototyping of solutions and development of proofs-of-concept systems.

Semantic Text Analytics lab at I2R

 

Positions Available: Research Fellows (postdoctoral) / Research Officers / Student Interns / Visiting Scientists

Description:

The lab focuses on developing AI / deep learning algorithms for semantic text analytics, including Q&A, dialogue system, multi-modal analytics (text-vision, text-table), human-robot interaction, online virtual assistant, distributed pre-training, and knowledge distillation, and for analytics of other documents, including PDF and CAD documents.

The job scope is to develop novel AI / deep learning in any of the afore-mentioned topics and to publish high-impact journal publications and patents.

Requirements:

  • PhD/Master/Bachelor in any of computer science/engineering, mathematics, data science, or related fields
  • Strong background in AI, deep learning, and natural language processing is preferred

Nature Language Processing Group at I2R

Positions Available: Researcher Scientists, Research Engineers, Research Interns

Description:

Work with our researchers and engineers to develop advanced natural language processing technologies, in collaboration with our industrial partners including Baidu and Singapore government organisations as well as local and international research organizations and universities. We are open to excellent intern students as well working on basic technologies and research which may lead to further Post Graduate studies and employments besides contributing the technology advancements and applications.

Machine Intellection (MI) Department at I2R

Positions Available: Artificial Intelligence (AI) & Computer Vision research scientists and engineers / intern students / visiting scientists’ positions

Description:

MI focuses on developing cutting edge next generation AI/ deep learning algorithms for solving various problems ranging from NLP to 3D vision.

We particularly focus on Multi-modal deep learning along with mix of 2D-3D vision-based solutions for fundamental and industrial research. These technologies encompass various fields from Semiconductor industry to Robotics and Medical Imaging. 2D-3D machine vision generates huge amount of data and thus our focus is not only in accurate data analysis and model development but also efficient solutions for offline and real-time solutions. There is an unmet need for new methods especially AI/deep learning for 3D vision analysis and integration.

The job scope is to develop novel AI / deep learning to:

  1. Handle large 2D-3D vision data
  2. 2D-3D segmentation using fully supervised and semi-supervised algorithms
  3. Development of efficient models for deployment on edge
  4. Development of light weight 2D and 3D object detection models using little data for robots. 

The expected deliverables are high-impact conferences, journal publications, patents and model deployment for industrial projects.

AI for Healthcare at I2R

Description:

Our programmes span machine learning, deep learning and artificial intelligence R&D for healthcare applications. Projects interface one-of-a-kind clinical datasets with cutting edge deep learning/machine learning technologies and unique multidisciplinary collaborations. Our focus is to address critical technology gaps in harnessing the power of AI for transforming healthcare.

Specific research themes include multimodal data analytics on combinations of structured and unstructured healthcare data, predictive analytics on time series healthcare data, optimization methodologies for decision support, federated learning, unsupervised deep learning, domain knowledge integration for interpretable ML/DL, advanced methods for medical image processing, and overcoming barriers for translation or deployment of ML/DL solutions in practice.

All positions entail working in large multi-disciplinary machine learning and deep learning teams in close collaboration with clinical, academic and industry partners on projects that have the potential to transform patient-care and deliver improved health outcomes.

Requirements:

Candidates with backgrounds in mathematical optimization, deep learning, machine learning, Bayesian methodologies, statistical inference, natural language processing, computer vision, medical image processing, biomedical informatics, and data mining are welcome to apply.

Computer Vision and Pattern Discovery Group at the Bioinformatics Institute

Positions Available: Research Scientist (PhD) and Research Assistant (non-PhD)

We are a multi-disciplinary research group working on the analysis of bio-images, in particular but not restricted to, images and videos of, patient biopsy samples, OCT images and MRI/CT scans, life and fixed cells. We also work on time series, non-image data sets.  Our work uses deep learning methodologies and computer vision for the improvement of healthcare.

In addition, to healthcare we are engaged in a wide area of AI applications, such as agriculture technology, health insurance etc.

Candidates are sought to:

  1. Develop AI methodologies to perform computer assisted diagnostics for healthcare, images to be analysed includes histology slides as well as radiology images.
  2. Work closely with clinicians and/or biologist to contribute to better assessment of medical risks.

Requirements:

** no prior experience in deep learning and data science is required, we will provide training to individuals aspiring to go into deep learning and artificial intelligence.

  • Ph.D or Basic Degree, a strong background in computing.
  • Experience and versatile in programming especially in python.
  • Familiar with applied mathematics which includes but not limited to knowledge in optimisation, statistics, deep learning and machine learning formalism.
  • Prior domain knowledge is not required but candidate must be willing to learn domain knowledge

Human-centric AI at IHPC

Description:

The Human-centric AI programme aims to develop AI technologies that understand humans, work better with humans, and are more human-like – AI that can learn faster, with fewer examples and in ways that are understandable by humans.  To achieve this, we combine expertise from the social and cognitive sciences with current AI methods.

Our work includes Visual Intelligence, Natural Language Understanding, Affective Cognition, Cognitive Systems and Robotics, and Knowledge Representation and Reasoning. 

Full-time and internship positions are available from time to time in these areas.
