Satellite, Aviation & Maritime

We are to develop translational research capabilities and build domain capabilities in Satellite, Aviation and Maritime sectors, design and develop applications for translation that are cutting edge and produce outstanding research outputs with impact in these 3 sectors.

We will foster collaboration with industries and public agencies based on Singapore’s research landscape and international developments, and drive multi-disciplinary R&D in these 3 sectors.

mmWave antenna array

We will leverage on the existing capabilities in mmWave antenna array, including scalable high scan resolution antenna array, low power & cost-effective beamforming array, deep learning based and software defined large scale antenna array design with built-in self-calibration, to achieve compact satellite communication payloads fulfilling the SWaP requirements, and power and price competitive ground terminals. We will work closely with research departments to push technology frontier and also partner with local and global industries to enable mass adoption of satellite communications and to unlock the full potential of New Space Economy – small satellite constellations.

Space-borne VHF voice communication

We will develop Space-borne VHF voice communication to address the need for extended range coverage for real-time Aircraft Tracking and Communication for more effective air traffic management (ATM) of assigned flight Information Region (FIR), with the aid of ADS-B for real-time flight tracking and situation awareness. In partnership with CAAS, airport operators and aviation industries, the Division aims to develop local aviation translational R&D capabilities to serve the needs for improved aviation safety, airport & aircraft operational efficiency for Singapore, and for the world.

VHF Data Exchange System (VDES)

The recently developed capability in ship borne VHF Data Exchange System (VDES) mobile station has won the “Outstanding Maritime R&D and Technology Award” in the International Maritime Award 2019 with the industry partner ST Engineering and the MOT Minister Innovation Award 2018 jointly with MPA and ST Engineering. We will continue to develop and deepen the capability in satellite VDES, VDES base station to serve the need for enhanced maritime safety for future e-Navigation. In partnership with MPA, local IHLs and local enterprises, the Division aims to strengthen the local maritime translational R&D capabilities for improved maritime safety, port & shipping operational efficiency for Singapore, and for the world.
