IHPC's Adjunct Professor is TR35 Winner

03 Sep 2012
IHPC would like to congratulate Dr Zhang Baile, our Adjunct Professor, for receiving the prestigious MIT TR35 Global award for 2012.

The annual award, created by the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology"s Technology Review, recognizes the world’s top 35 innovators under the age of 35, from a wide range of fields like biotechnology and nanotechnology. Past winners include the likes of Google founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin, Facebook creator Mark Zuckerberg and Twitter inventor Jack Dorsey.

Dr Zhang’s work in developing an “invisible carpet cloak” was cited for the award.

This concept works much in the same fashion as the fictional invisibility cloak seen in the Harry Potter movies. But instead of Hollywood magic, the real-world technology relies on calcite crystals which can bend light in a unique way to hide objects, such as a coin, from visible sight.

Dr Zhang is an Assistant Professor at the Division of Physics and Applied Physics, School of Physical & Mathematical Sciences at Nanyang Technological University (NTU).
