New research collaboration to develop more efficient and eco-friendly ships

21 Jan 2015

IHPC, Sembcorp Marine Ltd, University of Glasgow and University of Glasgow Singapore (UGS) joined hands to improve the design of large ocean-going vessels.

The partnership, which was formed on 21 Jan 15, will combine the scientific expertise from IHPC, University of Glasgow and UGS, with Sembcorp Marine’s knowledge and wealth of experience in industrial maritime applications.

Under the three-year MoU, the partners will use computational modelling and visualisation technologies to design vessels with improved hydrodynamics for better fuel efficiency. In addition, they will collaborate and innovate on features to reduce harmful exhaust emissions and discharges by enhancing the vessel’s scrubber and ballast treatment systems.

Currently, maritime transport carries about 90 percent of all international trade and accounts for three percent of global greenhouse gas emissions.

The announcement was covered in media such as The Straits Times, Asia Today, Bloomberg Business Week as well as shipping-related portals like Ship&Bunker, Turkish Maritime, SeaShip News, and World Maritime News.
