Sensing Light and Waves

Sensing Light and Waves

21 Mar 2018
Is wireless electricity here? Ever wondered how you can power your entire home without wires? How can physics and photonics help companies to test reliability of products and ensure high quality standards? Heard of the phrase “quantum photonics” and do you know how it can revolutionise our daily life? In this seminar, A*STAR’s scientists shared some studies on electronics (think electrons!), photonics (light and waves) and physics, and how it creates impact on our daily lives.

Materials of the Future

Materials of the Future

20 Mar 2017
Materials are all around us. All the objects that we use everyday are made possible through research and development of materials. Everyday, scientists in A*STAR and all over the world are working on developing better, more durable and more effective materials that help to improve our lives. In this seminar, IHPC’s scientists shared how advanced metallic alloys and soft materials are increasingly used to design new classes of smart devices with multiple functions and enhanced durability.

Chemistry - It's Everywhere!

Chemistry - It's Everywhere!

30 Aug 2016
Did you know that supermarkets, pharmacies and department stores are practically the biggest buyers and sellers of consumer chemicals made in chemistry labs? From conditioning shampoo and detergents to nail polish and wall coatings, and even antimicrobial polymers and drugs, chemistry can be found everywhere in our everyday life! In this seminar, A*STAR’s chemists gave students an introduction to computational chemistry and helped students understand how chemistry can be used to design better consumer products. Our students learned how chemists make better nail polish and paints by controlling molecular interactions on computers, and even tried out some chemistry experiments live in the seminar room!

The Physics of Fluids and Heat

The Physics of Fluids and Heat

29 Mar 2016
IHPC's latest student's seminar examined the physics of fluids and heat in everyday objects, from ketchup to landslides, from baking a pizza to engineering cooling systems in aircraft. Incidentally, the science and technology behind these objects can be boiled down to solving simultaneous equations. In this seminar, IHPC's scientists highlighted the real world relevance of simultaneous equations and their role in solving complex everyday problems with the use of supercomputers.

Computing in Medicine

Computing in Medicine

28 Aug 2015
The Computing in Medicine seminar brought students into a fascinating world of computing and physics simulation in the medical field. Students learned how movies like Avatar and games like World of Warcraft design computer graphics – surprisingly, computer graphics are based on solving mathematical equations based on Newton’s law of motion! IHPC’s scientists also touched on how they use computers to create virtual realities in the medical field, and help advance the healthcare industry.

The Science Behind Thoughts

The Science Behind Thoughts

23 Mar 2015
What makes a person decide to switch from Tumblr to Instagram? Why do consumers prefer one brand over another? Why do people behave in a certain way or react in a specific manner to different issues? This intriguing and interactive seminar answered these questions and more, explaining how network science can help in understanding human behaviour and social interactions, and even assist governments in monitoring critical issues.

Lighting Up Physics

Lighting Up Physics

12 Aug 2014
Have you ever wondered what gives rise to the magnificent glass windows in European cathedrals? How is it possible to store thousands of movies on a single disc? How about finding out more about electromagnetic interference and its importance in our everyday gadgets such as mobile phones, laptops and TVs? This interesting and interactive seminar shed light on electronics and photonics, helping students to gain a deeper understanding about topics such as nano-optics and the diffraction limit, as well as electromagnetic interference and compatibility.

Thinking Through Science

Thinking Through Science

26 Mar 2014
How can we think through Science? How do our researchers work out the very steps to solve challenging problems that have no obvious answers? How do scientists deal with what is unknown, and how do they figure out methods to understand the unknown? This fun, interactive seminar gave students deeper insights into how scientists think through the key issues of their respective domains, such as fluid dynamics, engineering mechanics and computational chemistry.

Big on Big Data

Big on Big Data

22 Aug 2013
In a data crunching mood, over 250 students and some teachers attended the IHPC Student Seminar titled ‘Big On Big Data.” The seminar attempted to help students and teachers make sense out of big numbers in raw data.

Robotics: Beyond Human Imagination

Robotics: Beyond Human Imagination

01 Mar 2013
Robots grabbed the spotlight in the Genexis Theatre at Fusionopolis as the stars of the IHPC Student Seminar on Robotics.
