Q1: How can I request services or support from the EM suite?
Please, submit the EM project application form and contact manager of the EM suite with your enquiry. We arrange for a consultation meeting to discuss your project aims and objectives further.

Q2: When can I get my service project launched?
The waiting time is variable and depends on current load of other projects we run in the facility. The schedule for sample preparation, delivery and EM analysis must be pre-arranged with our staff and we reserve the right to refuse urgent orders when our capacity is full or if we cannot meet your deadline.
Q3: How do I prepare my sample before bringing it to the EM Suite?
EM analysis requires specific preparation, collection and fixation of a sample which are critical for preservation of ultrastructure. We provide all EM-grade fixatives and instructions or assistance for sample preparation. Conditions apply for transport and handling of biohazard samples. We reserve the right to refuse samples if they were not delivered in time or in quality and/or quantity insufficient for further processing.

Q4: When can I bring in my samples?
Time of sample delivery must be pre-arranged with our staff. All samples shall be delivered together (including all controls) for simultaneous processing, unless harvesting and fixation of samples at different days is necessary.

Q5: How long it takes to get results from analysis or complete a training on an instrument?
The EM analysis can take anything between few days and few months depending on complexity and aim of your project, total amount and volume of samples and technical approach for sample processing and EM imaging. Similarly, the length of training depends on complexity of an instrument (or method) and on previous experience and learning skills of a trainee.

Q6: What are the costs of services?
The total costs vary significantly and depend on complexity of an individual project, total amount of samples, a method of sample processing and volume of imaging data necessary for conclusive analysis. An estimate of costs may be provided on request. However, the final costs may differ as for example the time required for acquisition of sufficient imaging dataset depends on qualitative characteristics of an individual sample and can hardly be assessed in advance.

Q7: Can I use the electron microscope or another instrument in the EM suite on my own?
Yes, but only after training by our staff and after you pass an assessment. Accredited users are then eligible to access instruments via online booking system and are requested to comply with our Biosafety and user policy guidelines and to sign the risk assessment for procedures and instrument operation within the EM suite.

Q8: What if results of provided EM services have not met my expectations?
Our priority is to provide the best quality results in a reasonable time frame. However, we cannot guarantee that final results will yield original expectations (e.g. that analysis will reveal hypothesized phenotype or detect feature of interest with a satisfactory resolution). Whether result of the analysis will be conclusive also depends on qualitative and quantitative characteristics of submitted samples.
