A paper jointly authored by researchers from Fujikura and IME titled “20 Gbps BPSK Silicon Mach-Zehnder Modulator with Excellent Chirp-Free Performance” was presented the Best Paper Award at the 17th OptoElectronics and Communications Conference (OECC) 2012.
The paper describes a high-speed silicon modulator for long distance communications. The modulator employs Binary Phase-Shift Keying (BPSK) format that generates signals that are more resistant to errors than that of conventional On-Off Keying (OOK) format. The modulator has demonstrated high quality BPSK transmission at a high speed of 20 Gbps, setting an important milestone for affordable high speed optical communication networks using silicon photonics.
