Ultra-compact CMOS Compatible TE-Pass Polarizer for Silicon Photonics

High polarization-sensitivity in silicon photonics devices impairs signal integrity and performance. Integrated polarizers can provide a straightforward approach to mitigate against polarization-sensitivity but the smallest reported polarizer too date is not ideal for on-chip integration. This paper describes the first plasmonics-based polarizer on SOI platform. The polarizer is three orders of magnitude smaller than that of reported technology and it exhibits polarization extinction ratio and a low insertion loss ― competitive with similar polarizers on SOI platform. The compact device size and excellent broadband performance make the new polarizer an ideal solution to mitigate against polarization-dependent limitations in SOI platform.
