Shining Light on Perovskite Chalcogenides: Semiconductors for Visible to Infrared Optoelectronics

Perovskite Chalcogenides are a new class of semiconductors, which have tunable band gap in the visible to infrared part of the electromagnetic spectrum. In addition to the band gap tunability, they offer a unique opportunity to realize large density of states in semiconductors with high carrier mobility. In this talk, the speaker will discuss some of the advances made in his research group and the research community on the theory, synthesis of these materials and the understanding of their optoelectronic properties.

The symposium of Advanced Surfaces and Dynamic Materials will focus on an emerging field of research that seeks to understand and utilise dynamic surface interactions. Research components include characterisation and understanding of dynamic surface interactions, responsive polymers and new dynamic polymeric materials such as vitrimers. International experts in this research area will be presenting their work together with A*STAR scientists from the Advanced Surfaces Pharos program.

Chemical instabilities are what enable nerves to rapidly carry information through the body. While chemical instabilities are commonly exploited in biology, they have not been significantly considered for synthetic systems. The speaker will be presenting on how to use chemical instabilities to drive long-range chemical transport through swollen polymer films, at rates far exceeding conventional diffusive transport which may provide a new a paradigm for enhanced chemical sensing.

Electrochemical Formation of High-Performance Li-ion Battery Electrodes and Microphotonic Structures

In the area of photonics, via electrochemical etching of silicon, followed by materials conversion, 3D gradient refractive index micro-optics including flat lenses, Bragg mirrors, polarisation sensitive optical splitters and structures with nearly arbitrary refractive index distributions were formed with a particular focus on micro-optics important for solar energy harvesting. The conversion from silicon to silica and titania enabled the optics to operate in the visible with minimal loss, something particularly important for solar energy harvesting applications. In this seminar, the speaker will present a developed detailed model which enabled tight control over optical properties based only on the electrochemical etch conditions.
