Challenge in the realisation of quantum networks based on trapped ions is the mismatch between wavelengths of ion emission and the transmission of conventional optical fibres. We introduce a “photonic gear-box”, which will coherently change the wavelength of photons emitted by trapped ions from near-UV to IR.
