  • Smart materials, including dielectric, piezoelectric and ferroelectric polymer and ceramic materials.
  • Transducer / Sensor technologies, including acoustic / ultrasonic transducers / sensors and systems, chemical sensors, Microelectromechanical system (MEMS) sensors
  • Nondestructive Testing (NDT) and Structural Health Monitoring (SHM)

  • Material processing: Fabrication of piezoelectric ceramic coatings by thermal spray.  Fabrication of piezoelectric polymer coatings by aerosol spray. Preparation of polymer ultra-thin Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) deposition.
  • Structure characterization: Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR); X-ray Diffraction (XRD)
    Microscopes: Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM); Atomic force microscopy (AFM), Focused Ion Beam (FIB).
  • Electrical characterization: Dielectric constant/loss measurement, ferroelectric hysteresis and fatigue test, piezoelectric coefficient measurement of thin films by Laser Scanning Vibrometer (LSV).
  • Failure analysis: Defect localization by Thermally induced voltage alteration (TIVA), Photoemission Microscopy, and liquid crystal. Electrical analysis of circuit and transistors by Atomic Force Probe (AFP)
  • Smart materials and direct-write transducers for nondestructive testing  and structural health monitoring applications in aerospace and maritime industries.
