Corrosion is a multidisciplinary issue affecting almost all industrial sectors around the world. Losses due to corrosion are enormous and the economic impacts are significant, highlighting the dire need for a proactive approach to corrosion prevention and control. However, the lack of knowledge and experience in corrosion and corrosion protection among local technical managers, designers, engineers, and technicians remains one of the main obstacles to effective action in the industry.

Module | Implement Fundamentals of Corrosion and Corrosion Prevention

This module covers the fundamentals of corrosion-related issues in the industry and is designed to equip participants with the basic fundamentals of corrosion and its evaluation. It mainly covers the following three key topics:

Corrosion Fundamentals and Consequences
This includes the dangers associated with corrosion, different types of corrosion and their mechanisms, and the basics of the corrosion process.

Overview of Corrosion Control and Rectification

This session starts with an introduction to corrosion control methods, followed with details of surface preparation according to standards, coating application, quality control/inspection, and corrosion rectifications. Case studies on corrosion problems arising from coating failures will also be shared during classroom lectures.

Corrosion Characterisation and Testing
This section covers corrosion testing and characterisation techniques and procedures in industrial practices. Participants will get the opportunity to gain hands-on experiences via laboratory sessions and field tests commonly used for corrosion testing/investigations. Relevant international standards for field and laboratory accelerated tests will also be studied.

The comprehensive structure of this module incorporates classroom lectures, hands-on experimental work, and suitable case studies to represent a wider cross-section of the rudiments and evaluation of corrosion.
    


The module will be beneficial to technical managers, designers, engineers, and technicians dealing with corrosion-related issues at their respective fields of employment. Given the interdisciplinary nature of this subject, the personnel could be from any of Singapore’s industrial sectors including, but not limited to, oil and gas, marine, chemicals, food and beverages, manufacturing, infrastructure (power, water, roads, and transport), and construction, etc.

Dr Sudesh Wijesinghe is a scientist in SIMTech’s Surface Technology Group, specialising in the areas of corrosion and electrochemistry. Dr Sudesh received his PhD from the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, National University of Singapore (NUS) in 2005 and went on to work in the department as a Research Fellow until 2008. Following this, he joined SIMTech with an interest in developing capabilities in corrosion testing and research. Dr Sudesh is the Team Leader of Corrosion Characterisation and Protection Team in SIMTech. He is also an Adjunct Associate Professor at NUS.

Mr Andy Foo Kia Teng has more than 20 years' experience in the coatings industry handling coatings inspection and supervision, production, and sales management. He joined Elcometer Instruments in 1989 and has since been involved in sales, product training, paint testing, and coating inspection in the field as well as in laboratories. He has been a member of the National Association of Corrosion Engineers (NACE) for more than 25 years and is a trustee with the Singapore Founding Chapter of NACE and the Corrosion Association of Singapore. Mr Andy is a NACE-Certified Coating Inspector Level 3.

 


Module | Apply Advanced Coating Technologies for Corrosion and Wear Prevention

This course module aims to provide students with knowledge and practical skills on using advanced coating technologies for corrosion and wear prevention. The module covers electrochemical, sol-gel, and plasma-based coating processes together with their applications in corrosion and wear prevention.

The module is structured to enhance the knowledge of participants with lectures and lab demonstrations conducted in the well-equipped process and testing laboratories at SIMTech, followed by facilitated discussions for participants to identify and choose pertinent wear and/or corrosion-related problems encountered in their work. During the practice (hands-on) sessions, participants get to work on a specific relevant project of their choice under the coaching of topic experts to apply the knowledge and skills learnt in this module to address practical problems in their workplace.
 


  • Mangers, engineers, technicians working on coating development and distribution/marketing as well as equipment/facility maintenance
  • Managers, engineers and technicians of Singapore authorities who are tackling corrosion and prevention related work
  • Production/process directors and managers in decision-making roles for maintenance and upgrading of infrastructure and equipment

At the end of the course, learners should be able to gain the following knowledge and skills:

  • Industry performance requirements for surface treatment and coatings
  • Surface cleaning processes and surface property evaluation
  • Electrochemical and chemical coating processes
  • Conversion coating processes
  • Sol-gel chemistry and coating processes • Vacuum vapour deposition processes
  • Problem-solving skills in addressing practical corrosion or wear-related issues


  Dr Huang Zhaohong, Senior Scientist at SIMTech, received his BSc from the Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, MSc from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and PhD from the National University of Singapore. Prior to joining SIMTech, he worked in the aerospace industry for many years specializing in surface engineering. Dr Huang’s current research areas include electrochemical processes for protective coatings used for various industry applications such as electronics, automotive, aerospace, marine and O&G, green energy, high-precision engineering, as well as solid/liquid waste treatment.

Dr Linda Wu, Senior Scientist at SIMTech, obtained her BSc and MSc from the Tsinghua University, China, and PhD from the Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, on Materials Science. Her career history includes being a research staff at the Liverpool University, UK; Senior R&D Engineer at Philips Electronics (S) Pte Ltd and as a research assistant with NTU. She joined SIMTech in 2000 and has been the project leader for both research and industrial projects. Her research fields include nanoparticles synthesis and surface modification, sol-gel coating formulations, electrochemical processes and large area coating process.

Dr Zeng Xianting, Principal Scientist at SIMTech, received his BSc and MSc degrees from the Huazhong University of Science and Technology, China, and his PhD degree from the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Dr Zeng is a specialist with more than 20 years of R&D and industrial project experience in plasma-based physical and chemical vapour deposition (PVD/CVD) of nano-structured super hard coatings for surface protection, and functional coatings for surface functionalisation.
