The Precision Engineering Workforce Skills Qualifications Programme in Precision Measurements and Characterisation (PMC) is a joint initiative of the Singapore Institute of Manufacturing Technology (SIMTech) and the SkillsFuture Singapore (SSG) Agency. The objective of the course is to transfer the core competencies including fundamental knowledge and hands-on skills in optics, precision measurements, automatic inspection and material characterisation required for managers and engineers in precision engineering related manufacturing industries.

The course will be conducted through a series of lectures and hands-on experiments. Participants gain basic knowledge, techniques and hands-on skills in optics and lighting, machine vision, precision dimensional measurements, laser interferometer and precision machine metrology, precision instruments, measurement error and uncertainty analysis, material testing and characterisation, metrology measurement standards and traceability. Besides these basic measurement technologies, participants will also acquire advanced knowledge and technology trends on precision measurements for precision engineering.


Since 3 November 2014, electronic certificates (e-Certs) are issued by SkillsFuture Singapore (SSG) to participants who have attended and attained competency in the Singapore Skills Framework training modules. Visit here for more information about the e-Cert.

Module | Engineering Optics and Optical Measurements

This course provides knowledge and techniques of optical design, testing and engineering that are widely used for dimensional measurements and inspection. The course is structured into lectures of fundamental optics principles and case studies. The topics covered include applied optics, lighting design, detection technology, imaging and sensing system. After these topic lectures, the participants will apply what they learn on a personalised case study of their choice. With this extra practice element, the participants are instilling skill and attitude as well as acquiring knowledge. This will enable learners to perform actual tasks in their workplace more effectively and efficiently.
 


Knowledge of optics and optical measurement techniques will allow precision testing and measurements professionals and their managers to grasp the technical details of advanced optical measurement and inspection, and apply them to improve their factory performance, product quality and business portfolio.

Some unique features of this course are the hands-on sessions and personalised case studies. Participants will have the opportunity during the course to raise real problems from their workspaces and to use optical components, set-ups and instruments for further understanding of engineering optics and to find solutions of the problems.

Dr Li Xiang is a Senior Research Engineer from the Singapore Institute of Manufacturing Technology, SIMTech. His research areas include dimensional measurements, defect inspection, interferometry, wavefront sensing, fiber sensor and bio-imaging etc. His research outputs have been applied in sectors of semi-conductor, precision engineering, construction and biomedical etc.

Dr Ng Boon Ping is a Scientist from the Precision Measurements Group at SIMTech. He focuses in the research area of nanoscale optical measurement. He had developed in-house capabilities on the instrumentation of the scanning near-field optical microscope. Dr Ng was formerly attached to the National Institute of Standard and Technology (NIST), USA in 2012 and Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB), Germany in 2013. During his attachments, he investigated the metrology issues on the Atomic Force Microscope and Optical Scatterometry. Upon his return to Singapore, he rejoined SIMTech’s Precision Measurements Group and leads projects in nanoscale measurement for Mid-IR/X-ray wavelengths and wide-angle optical systems.

Dr Li Hao is a Scientist from SIMTech. He is experienced in complex optical system development for optical sensing, bio-optical imaging, nonlinear optics and X-ray optics for more than 10 years. He had developed numbers of optical systems for industry application or academic research purposes such as fiber acousto-optic modulator, plasmonic bio-sensor, nonlinear laser scanning microscope, laser endoscope system, coherent EUV source etc. He joined the SIMTech’s Precision Measurements Group in 2010 and since then, lead several industry and research projects. Currently his research is focused on nonlinear optics for super resolution imaging and table-top coherent X-ray generation.

The course aims to introduce fundamental concept and theoretical knowledge of precision dimensional measurement technology and nanoscale measurement technology for applications in the Precision Engineering industry, and as well as other related industrial sectors. Specifically, the contents of the module cover fundamentals of measurement errors, error analysis and uncertainty, precision measurement systems for dimensional measurements (CMM) and surface roughness measurements (stylus proflometry), precision machine tool calibration by laser interferometer, scanning near-field optical microscopy and atomic force microscopy for nanoscale dimensional measurements.

  • Calculate of uncertainty based on probability distribution of real life cases
  • Analyse error propagation and uncertainty calculation on dimension measurement of parts
  • Calculate of thermal uncertainty of manufactured parts
  • Perform measurement on actual parts using the Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM) and its case studies
  • Define surface topography and the types of parameters
  • Perform measurement of surface topography at different scales and resolution, using different systems and relate to the case studies
  • Determine errors contributing to machine instrumentation
  • Understand measurement errors and techniques of laser displacement interferometer and case studies
         

 
Dr Fang Zhongping specialises in optics, machine vision, precision measurements and metrology technology. He has more than 30 years of industrial and R&D experience. Dr. Fang is a Senior Scientist with the Precision Measurements Group from Singapore Institute of Manufacturing Technology (SIMTech) since 1995. Formerly, he was the manager of Photonic Systems Group, and the Machine Vision & Sensors Group. Prior to joining SIMTech, he held R&D positions with the National Institute of Metrology (NIM), Beijing, China, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), USA, Semiconductor Equipment and Optical companies. He graduated from the Tsinghua University, Beijing, China and received his Ph.D. degree jointly from the Tianjin University, China and the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, USA.

Ms Liu Yuchan is a Principal Research Engineer from SIMTech. She has more than 20 years of experience in precision measurements of dimensions and tolerances, surface profile and texture, as well as material mechanical properties from macro to nanometer scale. Her R&D interests focus on the development of both contact and non-contact methods for precision measurements and materials characterisation for product design and fabrication, quality control, failure analysis and repair or re-manufacturing to support R&D and industry in the areas of precision engineering, optics, medical devices, semiconductors, aerospace, automotive and more. She has published more than 80 research papers in international journals and conferences as the first author or co-author.

Dr Kok Shaw Wei is a Senior Scientist from SIMTech. He was previously with the Precision Measurements Group working in the research area of nanoscale measurement using of optical means for more than 7 years. In year 2011 and 2012, Dr Kok was seconded to Rolls-Royce Singapore to set up a measurement lab for their research unit. During his secondment, he also led a team researching on the automation of fan blade thickness measurement. In 2012 to 2014, he was the Team Lead of Measurement and Characterisation Unit in SIMTech, focusing on research issues faced by the industries. In 2015, he moved to the Mechatronics Group to lead a team focusing in the area of industrial automation.

Dr Seck Hon Luen is a Scientist from SIMTech currently working on phase related tomography technology. He received his Bachelor and Ph.D degrees from the Nanyang Technological University. His Ph.D. research topic was in the area of optical coherence tomography. His research interests include coherent and incoherent optical imaging.

This course teaches the basic skills in digital image processing, including vision system configuration, imaging hardware and optics, 2D image processing, color image processing and fundamentals of measurement in digital images. More advanced skills such as X-ray image processing, 3D image processing are also covered. Machine vision system design and development knowledge for actual cases in electronics, medical and precision engineering are taught.

The course trains participants on :
  • Competence in how to use digital camera, lens, illumination to build an imaging system;
  • Knowledge in 2D and 3D image processing to interpret the images automatically;

Dr Liu Tong is a Senior Research Engineer from SIMTech. He received his master degree in applied optics from the Tsinghua University, China, and his PhD degree in mechanical engineering from the Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. His research interests include x-ray imaging, computed tomography, optical measurement, and machine vision.

Dr Yin Xiaoming is a Senior Research Engineer from SIMTech. She received her PhD degree on computer vision from the Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. Her research interests include 2D and 3D Image processing, pattern recognition, automatic defect detection and classification, optical measurement, X-ray image processing.

Ms Xie Hong is a Principle Research Engineer from SIMTech. She has more than 20 years experience in material characterisations, testing and failure analysis and thin film coating deposition, specialized in spectroscopic analysis for thin films and surface analysis with FTIR, Raman spectroscopy, spectroscopic  ellipsometer and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS). She has been actively involved in R&D and industry projects to support material and process development for the manufacturing industry.

She has been working on electron microscopy and X-ray microanalysis and specialized in SEM/EDS/WDS/EBSD and advanced sample preparations for material characterisations and failure analysis. Her recent R&D activities focus on electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) and focus ion beam (FIB) to support R&D and industry in the material development, process optimisation and failure analysis for microelectronics, precision engineering, aerospace and automotive, and other sectors.

Ms Ma Cho Cho Khin is a Senior Research Engineer with the Measurement and Characterisation Unit from SIMTech since 2007. She is specialized in thermal analysis and X-ray characterisations for polymers, composites and alloys. She has been actively working with the manufacturing industry through projects and consultations for material evaluation, process optimisation, quality control and failure analysis.
