Course Introduction

For decades, manufacturers have relied on lean principles to reduce waste in operations and improve productivity. Lean principles allow manufacturers to streamline their operations with standardised processes, continuous improvement, and the empowerment of shop floor workers. Industry 4.0 has added a new dimension of opportunity but also another layer of complexity to achieving operational excellence.

Many run into the common pitfall of digitising waste by failing to ensure strong processes are in place before using technology to enhance them. Whilst Industry 4.0 will surely bring manufacturers an abundance of benefits alone, those who can create synergies with Lean will emerge frontrunners. Dr Ian Colotla, Partner and Managing Director

Ian Colotla is a core member of BCG’s Operations Practice and he leads the Manufacturing topic in Asia Pacific. Ian has more than 20 years of experience in operations, which spans across Lean transformation, supply chain diagnostic, and more recently Industry 4.0 Digital Factory design and development. Ian has co-authored 6 BCG Publications including Avoiding The Hidden Hazards of Industry 4.0, and The Power of Production Systems and China’s Next Leap in Manufacturing.

Mr Niels Haenisch, Expert Project Manager for Industry 4.0

Niels is part of BCG’s global team leading the Innovation Center for Operations network, focusing on accelerating Industry 4.0 adoption. He advises clients in Europe, Southeast Asia and Singapore on Operations topics including advanced manufacturing, Lean, manufacturing network strategy and advanced data analytics. He has conducted enablement workshops on Lean, Industry 4.0 and Big Data Analytics in Operations for client teams across industries.
