Metrology Upgrading Programme - Calibration of Digital Multimeter


Course Outline
This course covers the principles and techniques in the calibration of digital multimeter. The participants will learn how to develop general calibration procedure for multimeters using a multifunction calibrator, and understand practical issues such as the impact of grounding, interference, temperature, loading, cable and connectors that affect the accuracy of measurements.

The participants will also learn how to estimate the measurement uncertainty for the calibration of multimeters, and preparation of calibration reports. Measurement demonstrations will be conducted to illustrate some of the measurement techniques.

Day 1

Fundamental of electrical metrology

  • Vocabulary and concepts of metrology

  • Measurement standards and traceability

  • Introduction to measurement uncertainty

Principles of electrical measurements

  • Digital multimeter (DMM) and calibrator

  • Measurement of voltage, current, and resistance

  • Source of errors

  • Cables, connectors, and accessories

  • Understand the specifications and equipment selection

Day 2

Calibration of digital multimeter

  • General DMM calibration requirements

  • Accuracy ratio and compliance to specifications

  • Development of a general DMM calibration procedure

  • Estimation of measurement uncertainty and Calibration and Measurement Capabilities (CMC)

  • Reporting calibration results

  • Hands-on session
