Metrology Upgrading Programme - Temperature Measurements Using Liquid-in-glass Thermometers, Uncertainty Analysis & Calibration

About Metrology Upgrading Programme (MUP)

MUP aims to contribute to the productivity of the industry through transferring and sharing knowledge and expertise in measurement science and technology with the industry. This programme comprises metrology courses, workshops, and seminars which are held throughout the year. Technical staff and researchers who work on measurements and instrumentation in the various industrial sectors will benefit from the programme.

Course Outline

This course will introduce participants to temperature measurements using appropriate liquid-in-glass thermometers and the necessary correction and precaution to achieve high accuracy. The course covers:

  • The principles of measurement traceability, fundamentals of measurement uncertainties and interpretation of calibration reports.
  • The basic principles of liquid-in-glass thermometer.
  • Different types of liquid-in-glass thermometers
  • Errors in liquid-in-glass thermometry
  • Measurement of emergent stem temperature of liquid-in-glass thermometer
  • Calibration of liquid-in-glass thermometers
  • Calculation of measurement uncertainty

An important aspect of the course is the laboratory sessions which are specially designed to provide participants with valuable firsthand experience in the use of state-of-the-art instruments for temperature measurements.

Course Instructor

Mr. Victor Tan is a principal metrologist with 28 years of experience in temperature metrology. He set up the temperature measurement standards in NMC and has carried out many projects and is consulted widely in this area. Mr. Victor Tan received his training in thermometry in Australia.
