Metrology Upgrading Programme - Practical Dimensional Measurements

Course Outline

This course aims to provide participants with the technical knowledge and skills in practical dimensional measurements. Concepts to share will include maximising the accuracy of instrumentation and techniques, alternative approaches and familiarisation with information available in standard specification publication. The course covers:

  • The fundamentals of measurement (traceability, measurement hierarchy, measurement accuracy and the accuracy ratio)
  • Appreciation of various sources of measurement errors
  • Environmental effects and linear thermal expansion
  • Data handling, reduction, recording and reporting
  • Application of measuring instruments and measuring techniques and standards for linear, angle and geometrical measurements

A demonstration session on handling of basic instruments will be provided to allow the participants to see the concepts being put into practice.
