Fundamental Dimensional Measurements

Course Outline

This course aims to provide participants with the fundamental technical knowledge and skills in dimensional measurements. Concepts to share will include maximising the accuracy of instrumentation and techniques, alternative approaches and familiarisation with information available in standard specification publications. The course covers:

  • The fundamentals of measurement (traceability, measurement hierarchy, measurement accuracy and the accuracy ratio)
  • Appreciation of various sources of measurement errors
  • Environmental effects and linear thermal expansion
  • Data handling, reduction, recording and reporting
  • Application of measuring instruments and measuring techniques and standards for linear, angle and geometrical measurements

A demonstration session on handling of basic instruments will be provided to allow the participants to understand the concepts being put into practice.

Course Instructors

Mr. Rahman Ibrahim is a Senior Technical Executive at the National Metrology Centre with 30 years experience involving in high precision standards maintenance and dissemination, industry training and technical assessment for SAC-SINGLAS (Singapore Accreditation Council-Singapore Laboratory Accreditation Scheme) in the field of length and dimensional metrology.
