Seminar on Sound & Vibration Measurement - Instrumentations, Techniques & Applications

More than 110 participants participated in the seminar. They are technical professionals and managers from the industry including measurement and testing laboratories; government agencies (HDB, LTA, MOM, MINDEF, NEA and SPRING); and scientists and engineers in related fields. The seminar educated the participants on the basic principles of sound and vibration measurement; application of such measurement to their work; measurement uncertainty evaluation; as well as keep abreast of the latest developments in the field.

Among the invited speakers were two experts in sound and vibration measurement – Mr Erling Frederiksen and Mr Torben R. Licht. They are both Steering Group Members of the Danish Primary Laboratory of Acoustics (DPLA), and are distinguished members at various international metrology and standardisation committees for sound and vibration.

On the topic of “Sound and Vibration Measurement Standards in Singapore”, Ms Cui Shan of NMC highlighted Singapore’s metrology infrastructure for traceable and comparable sound and vibration measurements, including the newly developed ultrasound measurement capability. The new capability enables NMC to calibrate output power of medical ultrasound transducers using the method of radiation force balance in the frequency range of 1 to 10 MHz, with an uncertainty of less than 7% (shown below). For certain ultrasound systems that cannot be easily sent for calibration, the output power of the transducers can be measured in range of 1 to 3 MHz and 0.5 W to 12 W using a calibrated ultrasound power meter.

Mr Erling Frederiksen was the manager of Sound Branch of the Danish Primary Laboratory of Acoustics (DPLA). He represented Denmark at the Consultative Committee of Acoustic Ultrasound and Vibration (CCAUV) under the International Committee for Weights and Measures (CIPM), and a member of IEC/TC29 and the associated Working Groups for microphones and calibration, sound calibrators and sound intensity.

Mr Torben R. Licht heads the Vibration Transducer Calibration section of the Danish Primary Laboratory of Acoustics (DPLA). He is the current Chair of ISO TC108/SC3: Use and calibration of vibration and shock measuring instruments, and the Project Leader for ISO 16063-21, Methods for the calibration of vibration and shock transducers - Part 21: Vibration calibration by comparison to a reference transducer, the new standard issued in August 2003.

Ms Cui Shan joins National Metrology Centre in 2009 as a Metrologist in Acoustic & Vibration Laboratory. Since then, she has been actively involved in the maintenance and upgrading of acoustic and vibration measurement standards of Singapore.

Mr Eric Ng started Absolute Instrument Systems Pte Ltd in 2007 as an authorised distributor for environmental and OSH (Occupational Safety and Health) monitoring instruments. Since then, he has successfully integrated wireless web technologies with numerous measuring instruments providing automated remote real-time monitoring solutions.

Mr Tan Nam Seng is the managing director of Logicom Instruments Pte Ltd, a company specialises in service and sales of environmental simulation test equipment and non-contact vibration measurement instruments. With more than 10 years working experience in vibration test and measurement equipment, he is well versed in mechanical and environmental test requirements. Prior to Logicom Instruments, he was Test Engineering Manager in Intel Corporation.

Mr Wilfred Lim has been with Brüel & Kjær since 2006. As support engineer, he advises distributors in South Asia Pacific on measuring analysers & transducers applications. In addition, he coaches end-users both from private as well as public sectors on sound & vibration equipment usage.
