The Mass Laboratory is responsible for the establishment, maintenance and dissemination of the national mass standard to ensure the relevance of measurements in Singapore are traceable to SI Units internationally. NMC currently holds the national prototype kilogram (No. 83) that is used as a basis for the dissemination of the mass value to the industries through a series of comparative measurements to establish the mass scale range of 1 mg to 50 kg.

Beyond measurement traceability dissemination, mass measurement standards are also used to provide the traceability for accurate measurement of many mechanical quantities e.g. force, torque, pressure & vacuum, fluid flow, hardness, density, viscosity etc. The accurate measurement of mass presented opportunities for local companies to provide a wide range of measurement services serving both the local and as well as overseas markets, thus establishing NMC as an internationally recognised national metrology institute in the field of mass metrology.
