Bobby Cheon is a Principal Investigator at SICS and Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology at Nanyang Technological University. He completed his Ph.D. (Psychology) at Northwestern University, where he conducted research in social and cultural psychology, as well as in the emerging field of cultural neuroscience. Prior to joining SICS, he worked as a postdoctoral fellow at the Culture Science Institute of Nanyang Business School, where he continued his research on cultural diversity of social behaviors.
As a social/cultural psychologist, his research focuses on how threats and pressures from the social environment influence and interact with neurobiological mechanisms to shape social cognition and behavior. He has examined this interplay on processes such as social sensitivity, cooperation, social cohesion, decision-making, and preferences for own-group versus out-group members. He adopts a multidisciplinary approach to these research questions, drawing upon methodologies and tools from diverse areas such as experimental psychology, functional neuroimaging, behavioral genetics, and behavioral economics.
As an investigator at SICS, he is integrating his research experience in the study of culture and social behavior with nutritional science to examine how cultural and social factors modulate food choice, eating, nutrition and health. Through collaboration with the GUSTO (Growing Up in Singapore Towards Healthy Outcomes) study, he also seeks to investigate the role of biological and environmental factors on social development and the acquisition of food preferences and eating behaviors.
