The Precision Engineering Centre of Innovation, PE COI (sponsored by SPRING Singapore and A*STAR, hosted at SIMTech) set up a Gun Drilling Collaborative Industry Project (GDI) in Dec 2010 with 21 international and local members companies. It aims to foster closer relationship between its members and to create greater understanding of high aspect gun drilling of Inconel 718 for the Oil and Gas sector. Led by Halliburton, the key objective of the GDI is to create a collaborative opportunity for inter- and intra-related companies to gain additional awareness of potential business partners, technicalities and critical resources associated with gun drilling.
This Gun Drilling Capability Development Mission is hosted by Yudo Wanco, one of the most established mould-base manufacturers in the region, with its history starting from Hasco. This mission will enable our members to understand and appreciate how such gun drilling technology can be correspondingly applied in the Oil & Gas sector. The delegation will leave from SIMTech, Tower Block at 9.30 am and travel by chartered bus to Johor Bahru. At Yudo Wanco, the delegates will observe in detail, the gun drilling of a 1,600 mm deep hole with a diameter of 8 mm on Inconel 718 material together with a large flexible manufacturing system. The setup, flushing, re-sharpening, edge honing, measurement and inspection processes together with the challenges associated with rapid tool wear, maintenance of hole’s straightness, whipping and damping system employed will be illustrated to provide the delegate with a detailed grasp of the challenges involved. In addition, special sensory techniques developed and employed by SIMTech to capture drill slippages will also be illustrated.
